Volstad with 7 scoreless? What the hell is going on!?

Well, first, it's the minors. 2nd, guys can have fluke games. But third, his K and BB rates are actually decent in AAA, but he just suffers from that one bad inning syndrome. He does have some big league ability in him. He did post a 3.64 xFIP last year (although that seems more an anomaly, as his xFIP this year, 4.69 is more inline with his other years).

Both Javier and Jeffrey Baez hit home runs today.

Do the Cubs let Baez keep beating up on fools in Peoria or does he move to Daytona before the end of the year?

Hard for me to see them pushing Baez to Daytona this year. There's really no rush - it's only been around 200 AB's. There's also little things he can work on - consistency on defense, discipline on offense (although the flip side argument is that he might need to go up a level to work on his discipline, as the pitching in Low A just might not be good enough to challenge him to improve in that department). Add in that Alcantara doesn't seem primed for a bump to AA this year, and is a solid SS prospect in his own rights, and while Alcantara won't block Baez, I think there's enough reasons to not force the issue on Baez.

I guess, if Alcantara gets a bump to AA (with Lake playing more 3rd), then I could perhaps see it, but I doubt it. I think Baez starts 2013 in Daytona and hopefully forces his way to Tennessee.

Should have seen the ball he hit in South Bend the other night. 440+ to dead center over a 25 foot wall. Kid looked impressive all game, hitting, baserunning, and somewhat suprisingly in the field... Def hope he can keep developing because he looks special right now, and I've seen some good young kids play in South Bend over the years on opposing teams

I was there to see that one. I would guess the wall to be taller than that, but no doubt the dude crushed it. I don't know if I've mentioned before, but Baez take's mostly HR swings. It might have been Saturday's game, after he HR'd in his first AB he almost fell in the batter's box he swung so hard.

Junior-Lake-Past-10-Days-O-Meter:.354/.404/.654/1.060. Depending on how many I Cubs get called up to fill holes left by trade, should Lake be bumped to Iowa?

Based on almost literally ten days? No. No, he should not.

You saw a decent one that played for South Bend as well, unless you didn't think Justin Upton had a lot of talent.

I think Lake is a good candidate to repeat AA next year at least to start the year. He missed the first month of the year and went through a decent sized slump at one point. Even if Alcantara is there Lake can get time at 3B full time if necessary. Kinda the same path as Ronny Cedeno back in the day minus the reps at 3rd

He'll be in Iowa. I look forward to him boosting his trade value with silly PCL numbers.

It's not based on 10 days. He was at AA for much of last season after what looked like a breakout at Daytona. Didn't do so well. Caught a lot of eyes in fall and winter ball. Hit the DL. had a great start at Tennessee and hit a slump, and now he's heated up again.

The South Bend players were a given, haha, I did word that a little weird. They have Archie Bradley right now and he could be special if he learns to command his stuff better. And the guy that mentioned him swinging out of his shoes, absolutley! After that first home run he was winging it, but he did end up 3-4. Don't mind it as long as his K% doesn't increase dramtically as he progresses thru the levels in the system.

Thanx davell... Long time NSBB follower. First time posting. Kudos to all who keep us informed. Nice to come to a site where there's a lot of Cub fans with a decent knowledge of the game. Don't find that in too many places
