Trey Martin's putting together another very nice game. So far 2-for-2 with a HR, BB and a SB. He's been on fire for about a week now.

For a 19 year old CFer, he's showing he's got some pop so far. 5 2Bs, 2 3Bs and 3 HRs in right around 100 PAs. He's 6'2", 188 lbs., so he's got good size. Does anyone know anything about his defensive prowess?

I'm pretty sure defense is considered the best part of his game.

If that's accurate and he keeps hitting like this, then the Cubs got a steal in the 13th round last year, even as an overslot guy.

Post-draft last year, there was a lot of buzz about Trey Martin. The reports that I recall right now seemed to make it sound like it was debatable how much power he would eventually develop, due to his swing, but he was viewed as a potentially good defensive centerfielder.

vogelhomerun to go with vogeltriple. that's 20 extra base hits in 20 games.

But sure, Callis is right, he totally can't handle Boise/Peoria

Keith Law.

Maybe it is not his bat, but his glove??

I think it's more his Keith Law.

I am really not very concerned about sports writers. But I am interested in player development. When is a player ready to depart from Arizona. I find it hard to believe it is just when his bat is ready. Is Vogelbach ready, defensively, for the NWL.

I think Keith Law was trying to say the quality of pitching in the AZL is poor and we shouldn't take away too much from Vogelbach's hitting prowess. Where I'd disagree is that he isn't ready for promotion; he obviously needs a challenge against better pitching.

why not move him up to peoria and push hoilman and bour up a level?

I've been pushing for that - I'd rather not have Vogelbach and Rock Shoulders split time at Boise and I think Vogelbach can handle Peoria.

The only hit Pugliese gave up was a bunt signal.

Man, that's rough. All the batter had to do was receive a bunt signal from the 3rd base coach and he was automatically given a hit. That hardly seems fair to Pugliese.

Martin's hot streak coincided with him getting to play everyday as Dunston was demoted. Cubs obviously saw something that they picked him to stay at Boise over SDJR.

Btw, did you manage to get video of Geiger? Just curious, because I think you mentioned it once.

Tonight starts the 3 game series I'm attending, so hopefully. Although the forecast for tonight calls for rain, and it's so dry here I'm almost rooting for it.

You'd have to be a really clumsy numbnuts to not be ready to man 1B in short season ball.

Not to mention that I don't really understand how defense gets so appreciably harder by the level to where you would wait for progress at one level before furthering development at another.

This has been bothering me as well. It's not like the balls are going to come at him any differently in Boise. Why not work on any defensive problems at Boise while actually being challenged by pitching?

Maybe they want to give Shoulders a shot? Vogelbach's arrival would cut into Rock's time.

that's why they should leapfrog vogelbach to peoria. shoulders is doing well, but vogelbach is the real investment.

It may be that players have much, much greater opportunity to work on skills at Mesa than they do in higher leagues. I'm not sure how much practice drill there actually is when you're with Boise or Peoria. A lot of the work requirements for the players are eaten up by the games themselves combined with travel, figuring out how to get places on the road, time spent finding places to eat on the road, etc. The Cubs didn't invest multiple millions of dollars in a huge training complex in Boise, or in Eugene, etc..

At Mesa, they've got a fabulous complex with tons of fields, and all of the games are very close so that very little of the work-week is spent on the bus. I believe they have hours of drill/practice, in addition to the games. I'm not sure that's at all comparable at Boise or Peoria.

So it may be that while the balls don't come any differently during the Boise games, that a guy is getting way more practice balls in Mesa?

May be similar for hitting. They've got so many pitchers in Mesa, there aren't enough game innings to keep them all busy. So I think there is a lot of pitching/batting practice that goes on in which real professional pitchers are throwing to hitters, BP that doesn't show up in the box scores. But which can benefit the pitcher and benefit the hitters. But with a limited Boise roster, and basically one field and one mound to share between the home team and road team, how much fast professional-pitching BP does a guy get? Or is the sum of batting practice one hour for the whole team, as thrown by a 50-year-old ex-position player like Bill Buckner? There might be a whole lot more productive BP in Mesa?

Who knows, there may also be better video-and-charting technology in Mesa? For all I know, maybe they've got an electronic strike zone detector or something to help hitters learn the strike zone. Or permanent video equipment to record BP as well as game AB for analysis? Perhaps they have much better rooms and monitors for doing the video study?

I have no idea. But I'm thinking there may actually be more advantages than we can even dream of for doing as much of the training/development as possible in Mesa. I'm just guessing, of course, I have no idea.

Yea, that's what we heard last week, but we've yet to see a hint of it.

Why is this in the 7-17 thread? Is this from yesterday and he's playing today? Or wrong thread?
