Bruce Miles[/url]"]]A couple of notes before we get to the games. The Cubs indeed are giving Trey McNutt a shot in the bullpen at Tennessee. “Give it a different look and see what happens,” Oneri said. McNutt, once a fast-tracker, had blister problems last season and could not put it together as a starter this season.

I don't believe Jackson has started a game since June 11, so hopefully the 'pen is the plan.

Is there reason to think that McNutt has any stuff that's still worth being interested in?

Two years ago he was a rising prospect who was supposedly throwing mid-90's, and doing so consistently, while also throwing a promising developing breaking pitch.

But at this point, his velocity has gone backward and neither his movement nor command have improved. At this point, isn't he basically a former prospect with fairly average velocity and nothing much in terms of command, breaking ball, or movement?

Why is it that we still think he's a meaningful prospect?

I hadn't heard about a drop off in velocity. What have you heard on him recently, Craig?

I doubt he's in the majority of top 20's at this point. I think we're pretty much all hoping he can develop into a back end of the pen type, best case scenario. At least in his 2 relief appearances, he's K'd 5 in 4.1. Ridiculously SSS, but it's something.

I haven't heard much of anything, actually. But two years ago there was talk of 95-96, and almost with the sense that he was a big horse where that and more could become routine. Last year I was hearing 88-92 with an occasional 4-seam 94. This year I've heard very little, maybe the most enthusiastic being a game where he topped in the 92-94 range. But there are many hundreds of prospects who top in that range or higher, so if that's his fastest stuff on his best day, that's pretty unexciting.

McNutt should be in the pen. I imagine the hope is that he can run the fastball up a bit more out of the pen (haven't heard numbers out of the pen, earlier this year, supposedly occasionally peaked around 95 on the 4-seamer).

As for his breaking ball, I imagine part of the hope is that out of the pen, he can stop thinking about the change, stop thinking about stamina, stop thinking about sequencing, and, well, basically let it rip. This is similar to what I always wondered about Jay Jackson out of the pen, and it sounds like Jay Jackson's slider has looked a lot better. Still have heard decently promising stuff on McNutt's breaking ball this year (not good ... just that the ability that people were excited about once upon a time was still there).

I've always had an odd feeling towards McNutt. 2 years ago, I preferred Archer and thought McNutt was over-rated. Last year, I thought he was under-rated. At a certain point, though, if he simply can't stay healthy/work deep, the move had to be made.

It baffles me that Loosen is still in A+, tbh. Not that Loosen is a guy worth getting excited about, but Ty'Relle Harris/Zach Rosscup aren't exactly studs either and Loosen's been dominating A+ hitters since his bad start to the year (which is all but forgotten now). With McNutt in the pen, I honestly thought Loosen would be up. Maybe he'll be up after this cycle, as I can't imagine Ty'Relle Harris staying a starter, so it comes down to whether or not they want Rosscup starting.

Harris was a spot starter due to a rain out/doubleheader the last time through the rotation. That said, Rosscup ame out of the pen yesterday too so I have no idea what's going on.

Szczur was 3-4, Torreyes was 2-4 with a steal, average up to .253. Loosen hopefully made his last start for Daytona, going 7.1, 5 hits, 1 run, 3 walks and 6 K's.

If you're following the Iowa game....Shhhhhh!

I would be less surprised if Alfredo Amezaga gave birth to a unicorn right on the field.
