So the only definites are Shark and Wood. Garza's a question mark, but it seems likely we'll either have him or get his replacement in a trade. I wouldn't mind giving Ervin Santana a shot. Joe Saunders seems like a Maholm type pickup, but I guess I could see a team giving him a longer deal than the one or two years at the most that I would. Atlanta is going to need a 3B or an OFer next year, so I'd love to find a way to still get Delgado from them. They've got the pitching depth to trade from, so he's still extremely high on my wish list. Another team that has pitchibg and will be loiking to move some for offense is Oakland. They have Parker, Milone, Blackley, Griffin, Ross, Anderson, Straily, and Gray. I'd love to find a way to get Brett Anderson from them.

A few comments. The Cubs don't really have anything to give Atlanta as an answer to their 3B or OF problem, unless they want DeJesus, and I don't see Delgado coming from the Braves in that case. The only thing that Cubs have that Atlanta would want for Delgado would be Garza, and I believe that most of their rotation is back next year. Hanson, Maholm, and Minor are all under control for 2013. Hudson has a modest 9Mil option that will likely be picked up. Maybe they do take Garza to get another top of the rotation guy, since Hudson is no longer one. But Garza would be at the expense of a rotation spot for young guys like Teheran, Gilmartin, and Beachy who could be back in the middle of next season.

The A's are very interesting. Anderson would be nice to get, and he won't require a package like they got for Gio/Cahill because of Tommy John. He's probably the odd man out right now, as his salary goes up to 5.75M next year and the rest of those guys will be much cheaper. He's still very young, under control for a few more years, seems to fit exactly what the FO wants. I think Anderson could possibly be had in a 1-for-1 deal for Brett Jackson.

Where does Vizcaino figure into all of this? My guess is he starts the season in the AAA rotation, but should be able to get some starts at the ML level (if the Cubs plan to use him as a starter) though on an innings limit.

Yeah, when I made this thread, I assumed things would be a lot clearer after the deadline.

I still think Garza is gone this offseason. I think the Cubs have already made up their mind they don't see him as a long-term piece and intended to trade him this deadline before his brief injury ruined it.

I'll assume we get one Delgado-style guy ready to step into the rotation immediately. That leaves us with Samardzija/Wood/Garzatrade/Volstad next year, and really you'd love to bump at least Volstad.

I don't think Volstad is coming back. I'm guessing he'll be replaced by another Volstad-like reclamation project.

I don't think reclamation is the right word. Volstad will be 26, has had some major league success and will be under control for awhile. It's a little early to let him go with the current lack of major league starters. He'll be one of the guys to pay attention to for the rest of the season.

Agreed. There's really no benefit to giving Germano or Coleman starts over him. Volstad should indeed finish the season on the big league team regardless. However, I would be interested in seeing what he could do out of the pen. If he pitches 1 inning a game, it should be less likely to be of the "of doom" variety.

Hasn't the idea been put out there that Volstad has been getting into trouble when runners get on base, implying that he isn't as effective out of the stretch? If that's what's causing his bad innings, then a move to the pen won't help it at all.

I was thinking Brett and/or Vitters could interest Atlanta possibly. Granted, either or both probably would need to come up and audition well for us. Anderson's probably my main focus though, he'd be a great get for us, in my mind.

There's no way we count on him as a rotation guy next year. First, he's young as hell, second he's coming off of TJS, and third, most importantly, the max innings he's EVER pitched in a prefessional season is 113 and he blew his arm out doing it. I hope he's in Tennessee or Iowa next year with possibly a September callup, if things have gone well.

If he's on an innings cap and starting in the minors, chances are we won't see him in September. The best bet to see him with Chicago would be July sometime before he gets shut down.

And that's just what they should do. His value is a s a starter, so there's no reason to start him in the big leagues as a reliever just to have him up here, and then stretch him out in the future. If he starts in Iowa or Tenn at 2-4 innings per game and works his way up, that's fine by me. Remember, he's only 21.

anibal sanchez has been getting crushed with detroit, and his numbers on the season overall have taken a significant hit. his FIP was still at 3.83 (before tonight's 4.97 FIP performance), but his era is up to 4.52 and he's given up a ton of hits.

he still looks good for the future, but could this make him cheaper in the offseason?

Carlos Villanueva from Toronto intrigues me

Maybe as a ST invite, but we're not exactly talking about a young guy waiting for a breakout season here. I'm actually very surprised that he's only 28. It seemed like he was with the Brewers for ages.

His xFIP is also still looking good at 3.70. I agree with davell that the lack of top-end pitching will likely trump his poor traditional numbers, but I'd still pursue him in the offseason (to a certain point).

you are crazy if you think he is a candidate for a ST invite - only 28 and pitching well in the AL - if Toronto doesn't get him resigned before he gets to FA there will be a bit of a bidding war for him

I doubt we go more than 2 years on anyone this offseason. I expect a guy like Ervin Santana, Liriano maybe, Shaun Marcum at the max. But I do expect us to add one good cost controlled, young starter via trade. Not for Garza either, who is a total unknown for us obviously, but that I'd bet is on our opening day roster.

Bhahahahaa, the same guy pimping Brooks Raley as a future rotation centerpiece thinks all Villanueva is worth is a ST invite.

Geez, Villanueva on a ST invite? Hell, I've kind of written him off because he may require a longer deal than what I figure we'll be giving out this offseason. If he keeps up what he's doing, I could see someone going 3-33ish or so on him.

A couple of my Braves fan friends seem to think that they won't be able to re-sign Michael Bourn. And with Chipper retiring, perhaps a Jackson/Vitters package makes perfect sense for them. That being said, they (being the fans) appear to be wanting to acquire someone for LF and move Prado to 3rd to solve the Chipper situation. Either way, A Vitters/Jackson combo should be enough to get a nice return from Atlanta if they were inclined to pull the trigger on such a trade, would it not?

Do me a favor and bring up the post where I claimed that Brooks Raley is a centerpiece of anything.
