Probable Starters

Iowa: RHP Frankie De La Cruz (2.58 ERA, 4.66 FIP, 52.1 IP, 27 K, 27 BB)

Tennessee: RHP Nick Struck (4.09 ERA, 4.03 FIP, 77 IP, 62 K, 24 BB)

Daytona: LHP Austin Kirk (2.63 ERA, 3.20 FIP, 78.2 IP, 46 K, 18 BB)

Boise: RHP James Pugliese (5.40 ERA, 3.28 FIP, 5 IP, 1 K, 2 BB)

AZ with the day off already?

No idea who is starting down in the AZL. MiLB.com don't list probable starters for the AZL and the local papers don't cover the league.

One more day, guys. One more day.

I'm extremely curious as to what we do with Johnson and Blackburn. Whether we just let them get their feet wet, or if we actually let them pitch throughout the summer. I'm thinking it's the former and I definitely have confidence with this group. Yet, irrationally, I also want to see these guys surprise us and immediately become guys we get excited about.

What was the purpose of taking Szczur off the DL when he's obviously not ready to play yet?

Struck keeps trucking along (solid 4 innings of work so far, 1 solo homer, 1 walk, 55 pitches), with enough solid outings to keep some intrigue, but doesn't seem to be making significant development. Needs some sort of pitch to get some ground balls to give him a shot. Sub-40% GB rates with average stuff makes it tough to really envision anything that meaningful. Still very young (age 22 season).

If he can't develop that change or some other option, I do wonder if his fastball plays better in the pen, and his attacking mentality may help there. He does have some good life on the fastball.

Lake is 4/4 with a double and a SB, he's now up to .320 on the year and a .856 OPS.

Edit: he's also playing 3b. I haven't followed him position wise (assumed he was still at short) but has he gotten many reps over there this year?

Candelario with an oppo taco

Speaking of him, I posted it in the "Cubs prospects in the news," but Badler said Candelario would have been a first-rounder this past draft.

Vitters just hit a bomb in the second deck.

BTW - this is the Cubs only hit of the game so far off Martin Perez.

Maybe I'm being a homer, but based solely on the farm's positions players I'd have to think the farm could compete with almost any other in the game. The pitching is still god awful, but at least they're half way there.

I haven't really looked at everyone's farm in depth, but we may actually have the best position player talent in the minors. Maybe even if we assume Rizzo's graduating. Assuming Almora signs, we've got 3 top 50 types in Soler, Almora, and Baez, 2 other possible top 100 guys in Brett and Szczur, 2 guys showing progress and very talented in Vitters and Lake, a potential young stud in Candelario, young middle infielders with potential in Hernandez, Amaya, Torreyes, and Alcantara, and a pair of bonus guys in Acosta and Malave.
