The nice thing about retreads is you have so little invested. They allow you to take your time with your prospects and not have to worry about rushing them.

Yeah, but they are only good when you have 1 or 2 in the everyday lineup, combatted by 1-3 really good players to pick up some of the slack. I know this season is lost, and knew i was before it started, but God this sucks a lot.

I think it's kind of interesting that we have an organization willing to do that. Filling your roster with worthless, cheap veterans so as to not have to rush prospects or spend money when you don't want to is the kind of tactical move you'd usually see people talk about on message boards but no front office would actually do.

I mean, has it even been a day since Theo said they want guys to get a full 162 games at AAA? Sure some of that is pandering so that the doesn't reveal the true (and obvious) service time motive for Rizzo, but Vitters of all people would probably benefit the most from that type of extended stay.

Not only is Vitters one who could benefit from more time developing, but more time developing specifically with the regime in charge. I'd like to see him after a good year plus of this sort of input, input that he obviously never had under the previous regime.

Yep, it does suck, but once you go in with it you gotta go all in.

Disappointing about Stewart. He showed some flashes. You can see why he was such a high draft pick. A guy with power like that should not be turning into a good-fielding, no-hit third baseman like Steve Buechele. But you got to get the bat on the ball to make something good happen, and Ian simply didn't get the bat on the ball enough.

On Vitters... No reason not to keep him at AAA and let him try to win the job next year in ST. Probably a September call up at the earliest.

Stewart is 36th among 167 qualifiers in K% He's 35th out of those 36 in wOBA Striking out too much was not his problem.

Ian Stewart is scheduled to visit a wrist specialist.

The Cubs are worried that Stewart may have nerve damage. He was placed on the disabled list Wednesday evening with a wrist issue that he's dealt with since last year. There's obviously no timetable for his return.

36th highest out of those 167. It's not his only problem, but strikeouts have been a problem for him throughout his career and to a lesser degree this year.

To tender or non tender a third baseman that hasn't OPS'd over 700 since 2010 and appears to have a debilitating wrist issue. #decisionstoPonder@Night.

Oh good, more Mather.

Mather's current line .264 .322 .415 .737. Isn't that almost exactly what we might have realistically expected from Stewart?

The biggest difference is the defense.

Others may disagree, but figuring he misses the rest of the season, I want him back next year. With it being highly doubtful we spend money next year, we can keep him for 80% of his current salary most likely. He'll make like 1.8 mill or so. Have him compete with Vitters and if he loses out, at least he's a power bat off the bench.

Unless some super-amazing 3b comes along in the offseason, mineaswell do this. As much as I love Vitters as a prospect, I have my doubts about him just stepping in and taking the job full-time immediately next spring.

For me, it depends on whether your assumption is correct. IF management really isn't going to spend this offseason and will continue to try to build ground up, then I'm fine with a Stewart / Vitters competition next season.

But I'm still holding out hope mgmt will be more aggressive.

Considering we have a LH 1B and Stewart isn't really an option at 2B or the OF, I don't think I see him sticking around as a 2 million dollar bench bat. Jeff Baker wasn't an OF before recently though, so who knows. Personally, I think you view him similarly to how you did this offseason, hope that the mitigating circumstances will be gone and he'll realize his potential as an above average 3B(given his defense, the bar isn't terribly high). Whether or not that's a gamble we want to take with 3B depends on what's done to the other problem spots on the roster, how well Rizzo/Shark/Wood finish the year, if Garza/Barney are traded, etc.

Damn, you really need to come up with a new line. Between that and your Goodfella's animated gif, it's getting a bit stale.

There are plenty of better options vs. wasting more time with Stewart.

wanna bet? FA options are Maicer Izturis, Placido Polanco, Mark Reynolds, Scott Rolen, and Ty Wiggington.

It's not a "line;" it's like you're going out of your way to be the antithesis of what this FO is supposed to be about. Stop being a meatball for two damn minutes.
