Interesting:

Mike Safford"]The Boise Hawks officially landed in Boise at 12:55 p.m. this afternoon, as 21 players, skipper Mark Johnson, trainer Bob Grimes, and the newest addition to the Cubs staff, a video intern made their debut in the Treasure Valley – getting hounded by reporters from KTVB (NBC) and the Idaho Statesman.

And thankfully, it's highly likely that said video intern is using equipment at least a step up from a Motorola Razr cell phone.

I believe all of the Cub minor league teams have video interns this year...we got one here in Peoria too. Part of the new regime :)

Pretty sure there was an article shortly after we signed up the new regime that they were implementing an organizational wide video system to record every players ab/pitch/defensive play for scouting/player development/evaluation and they were building some sort of huge video database off of those videos. We were also like 1 of only a handful of teams that didn't have a system like this in place yet up to that point.....

Yep, it's great to see the new regime implementing changes.

I would think Vogelbach gets Arizona. Sucks, but with his EXST, it's hard to argue, if that's the case. At least he appeared to be coming out of his slump late.

We can hope he was working on his swing, etc. and when the actual games start, he'll hit better than he has.

i'm disappointed that vogelbach didn't make it. what does this mean for him? i mean, he should at least be at boise by now.

Yeah, it's disappointing but he should still have a good chance at starting next year in Peoria. If he does that, he'd be right where you expected him to be if he went to Boise this year.

A few points

a) As others have noted, Vogelbach didn't do all that well in XST. Maybe he gets it going in rookie ball, and is in line for Boise call-up later this year. As Raisin noted, he could still be at Peoria to start 2013.

b) He's young. Even if he didn't make Peoria until 2014 ... he'd still be relatively age appropriate. Granted, at that point, there would be some serious concerns.

c) Roderick Shoulders is a fairly good first base prospect in his own right. Furthermore, don't forget that Candelario isn't a strong certainty to stick at 3rd.

Not getting promoted to Boise is the symptom, not the problem. The problem is that in EXST he sucked at baseball. I hope that changes in rookie ball.

that's what i mean. i'm not disappointed in the simple fact that he wasn't promoted. i'm disappointed that enough hasn't been seen in him to get him to that level.

Boise's rotation is Arias, Pugliese/Paulino, Scott, Dickson/Simpson, and Cruz.

Glad to see Paulino will piggyback. It would be great if one of the 2010 DSL trio of Cruz, Peralta and Paulino take off.

Paulino is actually younger than Arias.

Justin Marra added to Boise's roster as the second catcher.

The best thing is that, some of the warning signs on Peralta/Paulino/Cruz were always there, while, off the top, there hasn't been a glaring concern with Arias (although ... maybe I'm forgetting something ... can't seem to think of anything, some mechanical tidying up IIRC, but nothing glaring on that front. Don't recall an injury history, and don't recall him as a guy viewed as having shaky command)..

He has the size, frame, fastball, and potential on the breaking pitches. It's a damn fascinating package.

Tomorrow’s starter, Jose Arias (pictured right), has the potential to be something special. The big righty sits 92-96 with his fastball, but Rosario (pitching coach) feels that he will be able to hit 97 or 98 by the end of the summer.

Idaho Statesman"]Dominican Republic product Jose Arias will start the first game for Boise at Salem-Keizer on Friday. Pitching coach David Rosario likes what he’s seen from Arias in spring training. “He can go from 92 to 97 (mph),” Rosario said. “He’s a big, tall athletic guy with a lot of future. He’s definitely one of the most talented kids that we have got here.” Arias played in the Dominican Summer League last year.

Well, here are some brief observations.

1) I liked Jose Arias. Good control and velocity. Fastball/slider. I like his mound presence. Confident and intelligent. He left after 5. He probably was on a pitch count. SK never really threatened him.

2) Dunston looked good in center. He acts like he knows the game. Probably due to growing up surrounded by it. He was in the right position to back up plays. He knew how to work a count (two walks). Good speed, but not great. He has a definite routine at the plate.

3) Candelario looked very good at 3B. Good arm, range, and instincts. He is young, so he may outgrow the position, but for now he is good. Ripped a nice double to right-center.

4) Hernandez has work to do defensively at SS. He has the tendency of lifting his glove up too soon. His three errors cost Boise the game. Two went right between his legs into the outfield. Funny thing is, besides those three errors, he looked good at short.

5) Amaya looked good at second too. Good range, arm, instincts.

6) Shoulders had a nice left handed swing. Looked good at first, but with his his size, I question his range. He had troubles with a sky-high pop up.

I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

Thanks. The brief scouting report for Arias above along with your first hand observations make him a guy I will keep an eye on this year. Looks like he could be a real good find.

Thanks Quakers. how did you think Contreras looked behind the plate?

Like someone who had played there before. His arm is strong enough. Accurate. But (and I am not an expert) he seemed to need to work on his footwork. He was blocking, rather than catching pitches. Hard to explain, but some people make it look so easy, not Wilson.

But considering he just made the change, ... we need to see how he looks by the end of the season. ...Does anyone know if he ever caught before?

Yeah, we actually signed him as a catcher. Unsure whether he played C in the DSL though. I think he did, at first, but I'm not sure.

Game 2 - quick observations.

I was sitting behind some scouts so I had the opportunity to see some radar gun readings.

Pugeleise - Topping out around 92, off-speed (curve balls) were upper 70's. He looked good the first few innings. But in the fourth he started to lose his release point and was leaving everything up. The pitching coach came out and said a few words that seemed to straighten him out. The potential is there. He is young. Arias made it look easy. Pugeliese looked like he was working.

Paulino - Topping out around 93. Control was off. Needs to work on his secondary pitches. Not the best of nights.

Shoulders - massive shot to right. I like this guy. He did strike out a couple of times. My impression is that he can hit any fastball. Sometimes looks bad against breaking pitches.

Contreras - Opposite field, wind aided, homerun.

Amaya - Tripled to left center.

The Boise team is very young. The average age must be at least a year younger than the Salem-Keizer team.

Game 3 - Quick Observations

1) Scott looked good. Tall and Lanky. Fastball topping out around 92. Good control. Good mound presence. When SK did get runners on, he wouldn't panic. He just shut them down. Ranking (after 1 game each) Arias, Scott, Pugeliese.

2) Simpson looked good (for two innings). Topping out around 86. At the beginning of his third inning I was laughing to myself thinking about some of the posters on this site would react to a positive report. But then he gave up a single and instead of shutting them down, he proceeded to get wild.

3) I am beginning to like Shoulders. Ripped a first ball fast ball for a double. He does put a hurt on the ball when he hits it. But he does strike out on slow breaking stuff. Good defense at first too. It will be interesting to see how he progresses at the plate. Will he be able to adjust and hit the breaking balls or will it be a hole in his game that will be exploited as he advances. He is a big boy. He will need to be at first or be the designated hitter.

4) Good defense by Boise. Amaya made a couple of real nice plays at second. I wonder what is going to happen when Bruno arrives?

5) Dunston had a couple of solid singles.
