Why Hawk's rant was right on the money

Steve Rosenblooom: Yes, umpire Mark Wegner had the right to eject White Sox starter Jose Quintana without a warning. The rules say so. But Wegner couldn't have looked more wrong doing it. He took a simple series of baseball events and mucked it up.

Can someone link me to the slide? I can't seem to find it.

Couldn't find a video but here's a photo (spoilered for size).

He slid way late and his left leg never got close to touching the bag. If it was soccer, Pierzynski would have been given a straight red.

If it was football he would have been called offsides.

I don't know what you mean, but it had the cadence of a joke.

How in the world does Hawk still have a job? Santo was a huge homer, but he did it in a quirky, lovable way. Hawk is a loud, obnoxious [expletive].

Actually, Hawk is perfect for Santo's role of the the ridiculous homer. The difference is that Ron was wisely relegated to the color commentator role on the radio and Hawk is inexplicably the play-by-play guy on the television broadcast.

And to add insult to injury, apparently Hawk applauded Wegner earlier in the series for not automatically calling the Sox player out on a potential force out at second since the Rays' ss didnt actually touch the bag while trying to turn a double play. So, according to Hawk, the umpire makes the right call when it benefits the Sox, but makes the wrong call when it goes against them.

Apparently Selig called Harrelson and chewed him out.

Good, but what the hell right does Selig have to do that? He's not an employee of MLB is he? He gets his paycheck from CSN/WGN I would imagine.

it's up to the ump's discretion to eject a pitcher he believes is throwing at a batter. the pitcher was obviously trying to hit the batter. hawk is such a fool. i don't understand how white sox fans could even want to listen to his nonsense.

i hate hawk, but i have to say that i love him at this moment and i hope he keeps doing it. umps suck ass and they need to get hammered publicly.

Hawk was dead wrong, though. AJP spiked Zobrist and he got drilled, and that's where it should have ended. Wegner tossed the pitcher to keep things from escalating (ostensibly).

I'd bet Hawk's issue is that he didn't even take the blatant spiking into account because he doesn't think it was dirty.

Wegner should have warned both teams after AJ got drilled. Wouldn't it have been fair to warm them or was the ump assuming that both teams knew this thing was supposed to be over?

it really doesn't matter. if an umpire deems that a pitcher was intentionally trying to hit a batter, he can throw him out of the game. often a warning is issued as a courtesy, but if you come out and immediately throw a ball behind a batter, that's really damn obvious and you can't get your panties in a bunch about getting tossed.

I'm ok with Hawk not being a zombie.

Me too. First one to get bit is Stone, and he'd probably immediately start chiming in on the abomination of a homerun call.

I love that it was reported that Hawk apologized to Wegner, and Hawk went out of his way to clarify to the media that he did NOT apologize. Then what did he call the guy for?

And his quotes make him out to be the victim because of the turmoil he has had to endure over the last few days.

Narcissistic hack? Check.

But the ump was right.

Supporting Hawk on this is like saying Joe McCarthy was right because technically there were Soviet spies.

i read that as jenny mccarthy and thought you were about to disparage the polio vaccine as being full of bull testicles.
