Two pitches into the game and Junior Lake (back in the leadoff spot after batting 3rd yesterday) singles and steals 2nd. 3rd pitch he's bunted over to 3rd.

I really want my faith in at least one of Lake & Vitters rewarded. :)

I think you've got a much better chance with Lake.

And almost on cue with our conversation the last couple days, Szczur homers for the first time this year. He's also batting 3rd tonight.

Now a double down the line in his 2nd AB.

Nice. May seems to be friendly towards a bunch of bats not named Jackson. Szczur has picked it up, Rizzo is still chugging along, Vitters has seen some success...

I'd like to see doubles pile up in this system.

Torreyes singled to load the bases for Szczur in the 5th and Matt hit a sac fly. Not sure if it was a really deep fly ball or the runners advanced on the throw but the runners on 1st and 2nd also tagged up.

Higher upside: Brett or Szczur? I think I'd say Szczur, but Brett has a much higher floor.

I can't agree with that. I think Brett's floor is that he never fixes his strikeouts and doesn't reach the majors. I think Szczur is a minimum of a 4/5 OF.

Oh yeah, I casually forgot about Jackson's ridiculous K rate, though I do think he'll reach the majors.

Jackson "reaching" the majors is not an issue. He's going to come up and play this year at some point unless something more disasterous happens than is currently going on in Iowa. Him sticking in the majors may be an issue, but with the current state of this team, he's either going to get every chance in the world in Chicago or be traded and get a shot there.

Goldstein said he's a guy that may struggle, but will eventually make the adjustments needed. That's kind of stuck with me on Brett. Sure, he'll K a ton, his BA probably never looks great, but I really see him as a longtime starter for us.

Geiger back from his broken hamate. Trevor Gretzky had a strong game. And the oddest thing I've seen from Arizona Phil since Simon Lee taking his hat whenever he went to cover first base:

In what could possibly be described as “EXST Cubs News of the Weird,” 21-year old Korean outfielder Dong-Yub Kim is now throwing left-handed.

DY Kim signed with the Cubs in February 2009, receiving a reported $550K signing bonus (equivalent to “3rd round money”), and made his U. S. debut at AZ Instructs post-2009. At that time he looked like a young Jose Canseco (a 19-year old kid with a combination of speed, HR power, and a rifle-arm), before tearing up his right shoulder and missing the 2010 season. He was limited to playing DH and 1B (and occasionally LF) after returning to action last year, but he has yet to get back to where he was in October 2009 (pre-surgery).

I had noticed him occasionally throwing left-handed when shagging fly balls in BP, but this is the first time he’s thrown left-handed in a game. And he actually throws better left-handed than he does right-handed (post-surgery)!

Also, in the comments:

Mark Malave is back at Fitch Park, in the rehab group. I don't know what type of injury he sustained, but it apparently required him seing a doctor in the U. S. I don't know whether he will be going back to Boca Chica or if he'll just stay at Fitch Park until he's able to play. Same goes for Jeffrey Baez (wrist injury).

Wonder why Searle was demoted to Daytona? He hadn't been pitching all that poorly.

Out of all the demotions and promotions I've seen since 2006, most don't make sense on the surface. Always a reason, but we rarely know.

2/3 day jumps his OBP by 8 points and OPS by 42. HR's help stats. A lot.

Nice to see some of the draft picks getting some hits recently in Mesa. Vogelbach has been terrible, but Lockhart getting a lot of hits lately, Shoulders had a little burst, Gretzky and Schlecht have gotten some. Even Dunston hasn't been terrible. I think even Trey Martin has gotten a hit lately.

Jackson with a K and now a walk since his leadoff triple. The walk was a 9-pitch AB. The K was 6 pitches and swinging.

Jackson 1-2, BB, K

Rest of Iowa Cubs 0-15, BB, 4Ks

Jackson was just picked off 1st.
