Speaking of OPS fun, Pablo Sandoval has a .677 OPS so far in the first season of his 5 year, 95 million contract.

High contact guy that never had much power or took too many walks, I wouldn't have thought he'd age well anyway

did you guys see those [expletive] give brandon moss a standing ovation? #fakehumility

They gave one to the one and only Daniel Descalso last night too. That was about the most awful game I could have possibly gone to.

AJ Burnett is probably done for the year with his elbow injury. That leaves the Pirates with a Cole/Liriano/Locke/Happ/Morton rotation.

Per mlb.com we miss Cole. Lester/Liriano, Arrieta/Happ, Haren/Locke

EDIT: On a related note, it looks like Bumgarner is the one Giants starter we'll miss in the long weekend series.

heard some old dude say neither the cubs or sox were going anywhere last night, so i said the cubs were one game out of a playoff berth but he's right about the sox

then he's like "the sox are only 3 games out of one" and i'm like...damnit he got me there...but i said something like "yeah, they've been hot the last week or so but have one of the worst offenses ever"

(and btw i just realized the major difference between the two teams is a massive canyon in defense)

anyway, yeah, his response was "that's because they got all them latin guys and it was too cold for them"

so i wasn't trying to say that i owned him or anything (because i didn't) but that he literally said that [expletive] to a random stranger he was having a casual conversation with

The big difference in the Sox's playoff odds is the number of teams. The Sox have to pass 3 teams to reach playoff position and there are 3 more teams that are one game or less behind them. The best of those 7 teams is likely to be really good for the rest of the season, so the Sox have to play out of their minds to have a shot.

Compare to the Cubs, who are one game and one team from being in playoff position, and one of only 3 teams within 6.5 games of WC2.

(The Cubs are the better team too, but this is an easier reason to get random people to understand)

Add on to that, Haren will only go once this week. He'll start next Monday against Milwaukee.

Fun facts:

The A's and Red Sox are the furthest out of a playoff spot in the AL. Both are 8 out of the wild card. In the NL, there are 6 teams that are at least 8 games out - the Braves are exactly 8 out and the Reds, Rockies, Brewers, Marlins and Phillies are all more.
