I really, really hate players sliding into first base. It aggravates me to an unreasonable degree.

I just saw that's how Hamilton injured his thumb; what a stupid, stupid way/reason to miss that much time.

I know it's only two starts, but Tanaka HURRRRRRRRRTS.

Hammel > Tanaka

Tanaka is younger, though, so he has time to catch up to him, I guess.

It's stupid. They should outlaw it except when trying to avoid a tag or a player.

Further testing on Matt Moore's left elbow Wednesday revealed a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament. The Rays and Moore are deciding on the next step, which is either surgery or rehabilitation.

I've resisted entering this idiotic debate that came up on my facebook feed...

"Best catcher in MLB history? Between Bench and Yogi... you do you think?"

Just about every Stl moran chimed in with "No catcher has ever been as good defensively as Yadi, plus, he brings a top 5 bat with him. Look at his numbers. They don't lie." (ok, so that's kind of a compilation of the comments)

Yadi is good, but as far as recent catchers go, Pudge was better defensively, wasn't he? Definitely offensively. And Piazza is the best offensive catcher, right?

Because Stan Musial. That's why.

And on a serious note, I think he was asking if anyone was better than those two. The guy asking the question likes to have civil baseball discussion that usually turns into people saying the Cubs suck after a while.

The first 6 years of Molina's career still count. He needs several more seasons of great offense before he's even HOF-worthy statistically, never mind GOAT stuff.

Eh, to me, when greatest ever type convos come up, if a guy has sustained a level of greatness to be considered that for like, say, 5 years (totally arbitrary, I realize), then you can have that conversation, whether or not other guys had longer overall better careers.

Does that make sense? i.e. Just a relatively long run of unprecedented production would be enough, even if he didn't have 10 consistently great years or something. I'm trying to think of a player as an example but nothing but made up hypotheticals come to mind.

That doesn't mean I'm advocating Yadi for GOAT catcher, for the record.

Sure, makes sense. Reasonable people can think Koufax is the GOAT, for example. That doesn't apply to Molina so much though, he has just 2 seasons above 4.5 wins. Even if we limit to his contemporaries, Piazza had a stretch where 5 of 6 years were 6+, Mauer cleared 5 WAR in 4 of 5 years, Pudge did the same as Mauer in 5 of 6 years, and Posada cleared 5.5 wins 3 different times. Even Posey is right there with Molina in total value the last 4 years, and he shattered his leg and missed 2/3 of a season.

I never knew Koufax had that kind of career arc. Damn.

Although I guess he was 26 when he broke out. But that's one hell of a breakout.

Great book on Koufax by Jane Leavy - it intertwines his career with a no hitter he throws agains the Cubs in LA. Interesting to hear the Cub player comments of his stuff in that game.

I think you have to talk about "the greatest" by era. I just think it's pointless to compare noncontemporary players. I think Molina deserves to be in the conversation as best in his era. And I hate myself for writing that.

i never really thought about it, but i read something somewhere the other day about japanese toilets. it made that point that if someone was about to cook me dinner and said "hey, let me clean up first" and then wiped a paper towel on his hands and dug in, i'd flip out. so why am i cool with doing the same thing with a place that ACTIVELY HAS POO?
