“Can you imagine someone saying that to me?” Pujols tells USA TODAY Sports in recalling the question from a reporter. “I felt like saying, ‘Come on, are you serious? Are you really asking me that? Check out my numbers. I know what Mike Trout has done in his first two years is pretty special, but will you look at my numbers. I’ve been doing this for almost 14 years.’

“The only guy in baseball who can match the numbers I’ve put up is Barry Bonds, and someone is actually asking if I can put up numbers like Mike Trout?

“Are you freaking kidding me?”

Egotistical? Yes. Inaccurate? Not entirely.

Also if someone is asking him now, at 34 years old, if he can put up Mike Trout numbers then they're stupid.

It is entirely inaccurate because Pujols cannot do what Trout will be doing this year, and that is the question.

I believe what he was asked is if he is motivated by Trout's accomplishments.

I get the point of that question, but Pujols doesn't need to be motivated, he needs to be healthy

I was referring to his statements about the numbers he's already put up.

This is just typical veteran baseball player stupidity. He was apparently asked if he could put up numbers like Trout, that's a question about 2014, not 2004. What he did last decade has nothing to do with anything.

Or given a youth potion.

He had a down year due to injuries. He was a 5 win player the year before. He shouldn't need to ask that question because he knows he's capable of doing it because he's already set that precedent. The question should've been about his health, not whether or not he could match the ridiculous numbers of a 21 year old wunderkind.

He hasn't been a 5 win player since 2010 and has been in clear decline for 3 consecutive seasons.

All the cool kids use fWAR.

But seriously, Albert's days of being an elite player, never mind in the same class as Mike Trout, are over. He's been in clear decline in just about every measurable category since 2009. If I had to put money on it, I'd wager he never sees 5 WAR (b or f) again. My intuition tells me that he's probably a 3-4 win player right now, if healthy.

I don't disagree with any of that.

On the fWAR vs bWAR tip, I thought they came to an agreement to adjust their metrics so that the WAR numbers for players would be comparable from here on out?

can someone explain like i'm 5 why fangraphs war is awesome and baseball-reference's should be ignored?

B-ref was using Total Zone for defensive metrics, while FG was using UZR, which is more reliable. They were also calculating replacement level differently.
