Neil deGrasse Tyson ‏@neiltyson 50m

In Baseball, a Pitcher who throws at a great Batter's head, has confessed his incompetence to the world.

Neil deGrasse Tyson ‏@neiltyson 25m

Not that anybody asked, but a baseball thrown 90 mph has about the same energy as a 0.22 caliber bullet fired from a handgun.

Who is that guy? He seems pretty cool.

Yeah, there's fires all over the place down here. We could seriously use some of those severe t-storms.

Really just the rain. In past years, the mountains and deserts in Southern Calfornia have burned thanks to fires sparked from dry lightning and gusty winds from monsoon storms that lacked rain.

Well yeah, the rain is what is needed. But the lightning and wind would be fine so long as it came with sustained heavy precipitation.

so, looks like that strikeout stuff with porcello was legit. since april he has 46 strikeouts and 8 walks in 43.2 innings. wish we had gotten him.

Alex Cobb got drilled in the head after pitching to Eric Hosmer. Taken out on a stretcher. Scary video...

Happens at least once a year it seems. Wonder how much longer it will be before pitcher's will have to wear a helmet, or some kind of less obtrusive protective device.

They had a piece on this on BT tonight; apparently MLB has approached two companies about developing protection for pitchers. The prototypes were basically caps with padded kevlar and seem to fit pretty well and didn't really look all that different.

I think this will be the tipping point. A year later and McCarthy is having seizures and can't get his act together, and now Cobb. He could throw for a dozen years, but who knows how he'll recover from this?

yeah, it's time for something. obviously you can't just put a catcher's mask on the pitcher and expect things to be cool, but it's time to put whatever the best thing we can come up with on the pitchers. hopefully whatever we start using now will push people to develop better stuff.
