But Cabrera has been the better offensive player this year

Trout has a higher wOBA and higher wRC+.

Cabrera is .6 higher in batting runs above replacement, but he has also played 154 games to Trout's 132.

Trout is .002 higher in wOBA and 6 wRC+ (and leads in B-VORP). That is the "close second" part of what I said. Cabrera leads OPS, weighted OPS, and OPS+, and leads overall batting value (in the AL), which is what I was basing "better offensive player" on, since that's the offensive portion of FanGraphs' WAR calculation.

Yea, it's splitting hairs when solely comparing their contributions as hitters. Close enough that it could go either way (unless RBIs are a big deal to you). I've got no qualms with that... but then Trout is a huge plus in baserunning and a huge plus defensively while Miggy is a clear negative in both departments. I realize you acknowledged this. I just don't get how that huge amount of value can be glossed over and treated as though it's no big deal if he doesn't win (which he probably won't).

You don't even have to buy in to the weight that fangraphs assigns to both (or the metrics themselves) to realize the disparity in those areas. They just couldn't be any further apart in those aspects of the game.

I guess if all we're arguing about is whether this is a big deal/joke/travesty or not or whatever, there's really no settling this debate.

All I'm really saying is that if Cabrera does win the Triple Crown,

1) He'll win the MVP easily

2) Despite RBIs being mostly a team-motivated stat, winning the Triple Crown is both rare and cool

3) No Triple Crown winner had a season where winning MVP was a joke, and Cabrera is no exception

4) I'm hoping he does, so I don't have to try to remember how to spell the name Yastrzemski again.

This Field of Dreams guy (didn't catch who it actually is, walked in to it late) is on Boers and Bernstein right now is decrying these new abbreviated stats and how it's "fashionable" to strike out now.

Bernstein is big on advanced stats, but I'm pretty sure he won't say anything to this guy.

EDIT - Oh, it's Wade Boggs.

it's a wonder baseball ever survived Don Baylor winning it over Fred Lynn and George Brett in '79

Ouch.

that's a weird guy to be decrying the "new abbreviated stats" because they [expletive] love him

a 9-year peak averaging more than 7 WAR, holy [expletive]

yea, bernstein actually did point out his absurd WAR total a little later on.

Wade Boggs who is appreciated a hell of a lot more by advanced stats than traditional.

See, now that is a joke.

the triple crown is stupid, we need to make a new one

someone decide what the best offensive, defensive, and baserunning stats are and let's all root for somebody to lead the league in all three.

RBI's/fewest strikeouts, fewest errors/most web gems, ground balls and/or throws beaten out at first/extra bases taken on pure hustle.

Stone is doing the PBP on tonight's Sox telecast. He is marginally better than he was in 1994, when he was forced into the role after Harry Caray suffered a stroke pre-game. That outing was astoundingly bad.
