"Something like, oh, the Astros gutting themselves into what amounts to a scheduled forfeit and how 14 of their 27 remaining games are likely to impact playoff races. Or for the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost back-to-back games to the Astros three weeks ago, amounting to the Astros’ only winning streak since June."

People need to get a grip on the Astros. This wasn't some 1998 Marlins teardown. They lost 106 games in 2011. And they did it with players like Wandy, Brett Myers, JA Happ, Clint Barmes, Carlos Lee, some of Michael Bourn, etc. What is the difference between losing 110 games with old, washed-up veterans and losing 115 games with busted prospects?

How do they determine home field advantage for the Wild Card playoffs? I am assuming the WC team with the better record gets the home game, and that would be the most logical answer, but as we know the MLB isnt always logical.

If two teams tie for the 2nd WC spot will there be enough time to arrange a one-game playoff for the right to go to the one-game playoff? That would probably be a logistical nighmare.

Major League Baseball today announced the schedule for the 2012 Postseason (#Postseason), which is set to open with the inaugural pair of Wild Card Games on Friday, October 5th. Game One of the 108th World Series is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24th in the ballpark of the National League Champions.

Changes to the Postseason format include the following:

Clubs from the same division will be allowed to play one another in either the Wild Card Game or the Division Series.

Tiebreaker games will be played to determine Division Championships, even if the two tied Clubs are assured of participating in the Postseason. If a Division Championship tiebreaker game is necessary, the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs will determine home-field advantage. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

If two Clubs are tied for both Wild Card berths, home-field advantage will be determined by the head-to-head record between the tied Clubs. If the head-to-head record is tied, then division record will be the next tiebreaker.

so nobody is talking about the fact that brandon mccarthy almost died?

I don't think they knew the severity of it until very recently today. The last thing I heard about it was after he was hit the reports were he was taken for precautionary measures and that he was conscious and coherent. I just read a few minutes about about his surgery...

Brandon McCarthy underwent surgery after being hit in the head by a line drive on Wednesday.

Very scary. The surgery was deemed necessary after a CT scan revealed an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. McCarthy had another scan Thursday which showed improvement from his previous scan while the epidural hemorrhage has subsided. Per a statement from A's general manager Billy Beane, McCarthy is "stable, awake and alert" and currently resting in the critical care unit of the hospital. His status as a baseball player is secondary at a time like this.

Definitely frightening

you could tell by the way he went down that it was more serious than others. he looked pretty fucked up. it was creepy.

i still think the cubs will sign him this offseason.

Admittedly I chose not to watch it so I didn't see how bad it was. I hate seeing stuff like that.

That being said if the injury doesn't hamper his ability on the mound, I would very much like to see the Cubs go after McCarthy this offseason, though it doesn't sound like he's the type of FA they're gonna target, sadly.

actualyl he sounds exactly like the type of guys they're going to go after. mccarthy was hurt earlier in the season. he's not going to get a huge contract. he is going to be one of the potentially undervalued guys that fits in to what they're doing.

I kinda picture McCarthy as one of the 2nd tier options along with guys like Sanchez and Jackson. McCarthy has been pretty recognizably above average since last season. I think he's going to be 3-4 year contract type guy, personally given his age and performance over the last couple years. Who knows. I just kinda picture them going after 1-2 year types to tread water while our younger players develop before splurging in FA. McCarthy doesn't strike me as that type of guy, personally. I think teams will see him as a #2 for the next few years

So Mike Trout obviously has been the most valuable player in the AL, pretty easily... but Miguel Cabrera has a legitimate chance at winning the triple crown. He's tied for 1st in AVG and RBI, and he's 4 homers shy of Hamilton's 39. I personally don't think he'll catch up in the HR race, but for arguments sake let's say Miguel Cabrera actually DID win the Triple Crown and Mike Trout continues to put up gaudy numbers and doesn't slow down at all...

Would it be insane to think that a triple crown winner wouldn't win MVP honors?

Happened to Ted Williams. Twice.

Touché, but didn't the media dislike Williams a lot back then which led to him losing the MVP (OMC would know more about that)? Plus it seems like the triple crown has become one of the most hallowed achievements in baseball over the past couple of eras since it hasn't happened since 1967. I just find it crazy that if he were to win the first triple crown in 45 years, it would come in a season where he loses the MVP award to a rookie. I don't know that's just crazy to me, but it would be justified, Trout is the clear cut most valuable player in the league.

Kind of a easy one but, Can you name the 3 players currently with at least 30 homers and at least a .300 batting average?

Miguel Cabrera

Ryan Braun

Adrian Beltre

And only 1 of those guys had to use PED's to get there!

I just noticed that I'm in the championship round of my fantasy baseball league (10 teams) and I only have one player with a SLG% over .500, partially due to Bautista going down. Look around the league and there's 32 qualified hitters with a SLG% over .500, and 8 over .550. Numbers like that make me feel a lot better about the relatively disappointing power output from Rizzo.

Did Beltre ever get caught? Didn't hear that.

Justin Smoak, a .161/.246/.268 hitter since the All-Star break, went 0-for-4 in the loss to the A's on Saturday.

Smoak hit fifth tonight. Because he's a first baseman and first basemen are supposed to do things like bat fifth. And the A's were hitting their fist baseman fifth! Forget the fact that Smoak has hit like a backup shortstop with a broken arm this year. He's a first baseman!
