I think the discussion Len and Bob had about it last night was about right. Let the ump know you'd like him to use a different glove and don't make a big deal of it unless he refuses to change it. End of story. No ratting anybody out, no disadvantage to the Nationals.

But the umpire would ask why though, correct? And once he took the glove he'd obviously see the pine tar in there.

What can pinetar do to a baseball anyway? Isn't it just to get a better grip? It's not like a spitter where the goal is to get the ball to slip out of your hand.

any substance on a ball will change it's rotation

Increased grip for better movement.

Crisco, Bardol, Vagisil. Any one of them will give you another two to three inches drop on your curve ball. 'Course if the umps are watching me real close I just rub a little jalapeño juice up my nose, get it runnin', and if I need to load the ball up I just... wipe my nose.

I tried Vaseline one time. It just messed with my control more than anything.

That's one of two times that I hit somebody in the head with a pitch. Oop.

I feel like this story is the sort of thing that can only happen in baseball:

Mets Look to Protect Chicken

"Everyone's like, 'It's funny,' and then it's like, 'All right, now what?' " teammate Jason Bay said. "You can't just put it out on Roosevelt Ave."

The chicken spent Friday night in a cage at Citi Field. Team chef Theresa Corderi fed the bird a meal of oatmeal, berries and bread after doing research into the appropriate cuisine on the internet.

"If anybody has a chicken farm or a petting zoo or somewhere where we can get him nice, I'd rather not kill Little Jerry Seinfeld," Byrdak said.

Is it just me or was inter-league play just interminable this year? Did it go on for an entire month? Now we're hearing that each team will be playing 20 inter-league games next season. Hopefully they'll spread the series around a bit and not group them all together.

Have you not heard about what is going to happen with IL next year?

I knew IL play would go on year long. I didn't know each team would be playing 20 games. I was hoping there would be fewer not more IL games I'm hoping each team's IL games aren't bunched together. I don't want the Cubs spending a month playing IL games again.

I suspect, as the Cubs are one of the few teams that have an actual IL rivalry, we'll be seeing a Cubs-WS series at the beginning or end of the season.

I didn't know where to put this -- the potpourri thread has apparently been locked on account of shenanigans.

The Cardinals just blasted out an e-mail offering $4 tickets for the July 2-5 games. I know the economy is bad, and the market for Cards tickets has always been soft. BBFIA my ass. But $4? Geez.

P.S. I still won't be going.

Colby Rasmus seems to really have figured it out in Toronto. After an awful start he has a .309/.356/.619/.974 line with 8 home runs over the last 28 days. I really wish we could've figured out a way to trade for him while he was in TLR's doghouse last year.

I read somewhere that he made a pretty significant change to his batting stance. He's absolutely mashing now and still getting great pitches to hit with Bautista and Encarnacion right behind him.

Yeah, I know he has changed something in his stance/mechanics/approach. I know the Cards were pissed at him for always going to his dad for advice and not always listening heeding the advice of their hitting coach. Maybe the Jays just let him deal with his dad as his hitting couch and don't care if he does or doesn't listen to his hitting coach.

He did...

As a loyal stoolie it would be great if I could get some vindication for my sullied name. After utilizing my incredible fundamentals and watching the ball fall directly into my hands i felt someone’s else’s hands go over mine. Without realizing who it was and just assuming it was the kids father, who was the one actually sitting next to me, I played some serious D and guarded the rock. After hot dogging to the crowd for a few seconds i realized that it was the kid who was actually on me. I gave him the ball AND we got to meet Dewayne Wise after the game. GIFs only tell part of the story, it would be cool if you told my half and cleared my name, VIVA LA STOOL!

PS – And as you would guess my friends are having a field day with this…

Carlos Ruiz hitting .361/.427/.579 and he's already at a 3.8 fWAR.

Is it odd that a 33 year old catcher just 'figured it out'?

Now I really hope somebody punches him in the throat.

Ten years ago today, the Expos made what was, in hindsight, one of the worst trades in history. The Indians traded them Bartolo Colon in exchange for Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore.

That deal officially killed baseball in Montreal.

Well that's not true.

Which part of it isn't true?
