Levine is saying that the LH reliever is Justin Thomas

Guy who's been bouncing around organizations as a Minor League Free Agent for the past few years. He sounds like organizational fodder.

Hopefully the +1 ends up being intriguing.

Not that I'll miss Byrd, but unless the +1 is at least somewhat intriguing, what benefit is it to us to be selling as low as possible on Byrd and geting back a guy who looks nothing short of awful and unnecessary? If it was to bring up Jackson, that would be one thing but to give us a 3 headed monster of Campana, Mather, and Johnson in center, I'd just as soon take my chances on Byrd building up his value. My only other explanation is that it's some sort of under the table sorry that the last toy we gave you broke compensation.

Typically teams don't trade for equipment, so yes I thought they'd get more than a bag of baseballs. I think they keep them in buckets now anyways.

They better be picking up all of Byrd's salary.

unless they plan on bringing up jackson, then yes, i'd imagine that the sox would have to pick up a majority of his contract, seeing as how the only other alternative is campana. otherwise, there's no reason to trade him.

As bad as he has been, it doesn't make sense to deal him unless the prospect has a upside.

Or you can save 5 million bucks. Or you're convinced he's been broken since the HBP in the head and he's not getting any better. Or if you want to give Campana more MLB at bats to learn what his future role will be.

Campana has already been called up with Demp going to the DL.

yes, i know. but essentially he's replacing byrd, whose production he is unlikely to eclipse.

So basically, in the past 2 days 3 guys have been dispatched from the 25 man roster and they brought up the 3 least intriguing replacements possible. At least Wood, Beliveau, and Sappelt would have provided us with something to follow.

A trade of Chicago Cubs center fielder Marlon Byrd to the Boston Red Sox appears imminent, a source close to the situation told ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine.

Another source indicated the Cubs will receive a left-handed reliever in return.

Shortly before game time against the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday, Byrd said via text message that he had been told nothing about a trade. Byrd was not in the starting lineup, Joe Mather began the game in center.

The potential trade was initially reported by Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, who tweeted a deal was close to being finalized.

I think this deal makes a lot of sense even if the Cubs got essentially nothing but maybe a million of salary relief. Campana gets a better look by the new management to see what he has, there's no question of where Byrd goes when Jackson is ready. And Campana's speed and defense will likely be more valuable to this year's Cubs than Byrd's rapidly declining bat anyway.

As for Byrd possibly being able to raise his trade value, you could flip that around and say that Campana will help the pitcher's trade values because of his elite defense in CF. I don't see Byrd's value increasing to get real legitimate pieces anyway-at best you would get a lottery ticket at the deadline if things went well.

Agreed with all this, except Byrd and Campana are equivalent defenders(Byrd might actually be better), but that's mitigated by Byrd's value being tied to the time that he can spend on his new team's roster this season.

Thank you for pointing out Byrd's defense which is still good to very good, and that Campana's defensive value is still unknown at this point. It will be interesting to see how the metrics grade Campana this year. I know last year UZR thought he was just amazing defensively mostly due to amazing range numbers, and with his elite pure speed that makes at least some sense. But it's hard to gauge how accurate that is without some extended time out there.
