Sources say if the team can't get a controversial bridge over Clark Street approved

It's not controversial, it's one [expletive] douche of an alderman being a whiny child

No kidding. A drunk fan could drop something over the railing of the bridge? Then put fencing over the bridge like what exists on highway overpasses. Or just make it enclosed. The threat of somebody dropping something off a bridge is something that could be used to stop construction of any bridge anywhere.

This Tom Tunney guy sounds like a real dick.

I think the controversy comes from the notion that the city would be giving up city owned airspace to the Cubs for what amounts to a bridge that isn't going to be used much as a bridge, since it only connects the relatively small hotel to the stadium, but rather is a billboard.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is warm to a #Wrigley RF party deck over Sheffield, says #Cubs & rooftops agreed on it: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/clout/chi-emanuel-warm-to-right-field-wrigley-party-deck-over-sheffield-20130730,0,4882487.story … #Rahm

I'm confident/hopeful that the Cubs can come up with something much nicer looking than what the rooftops slapped together.

Thank You

Dear friends,

Due to your tremendous support, the Chicago City Council last week approved our plans to restore Wrigley Field and enhance the area around the ballpark. This would not have occurred without the support of the tens of thousands of people who signed our petition, wrote letters, sent emails, attended hearings and made phone calls on our behalf. As an organization, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you. We reached this milestone together.

Since unveiling our vision six months ago, the plan to restore and expand Wrigley Field remains on track to become reality. As we approach the 100th year of Cubs baseball at the Friendly Confines, we are closer than ever to being able to deliver the modern amenities for fans and better facilities for players, while preserving the original beauty, charm and tradition of the ballpark our fans hold dear.

Further, the $500 million investment by the Ricketts family will create 2,100 jobs and generate $1.2 billion in economic impact to the local economy for the next 30 years, as well as provide significant benefits to the neighborhood. It will also preserve the third largest tourist attraction in Illinois and ensure future generations of Cubs fans can enjoy the tradition of baseball at Wrigley Field.

We are excited to begin construction on this amazing project and hope to do so once the remaining open issues are resolved. Your important role in this process continues and your support remains crucial to us and to our future. We will keep you updated on our progress and let you know when we plan to begin construction.

If you live in the community and want to stay involved as this process continues, please fill out the form below and someone from the organization will reach out to you soon.

Now that the Wrigley Field package has been approved, the Cubs can turn their attention to another deal that will have dramatic implications for the financial future of the franchise.

Negotiations are expected to heat up between the Cubs and WGN-Ch. 9. Technically, their pact runs through 2022, but the Cubs are exercising a clause to opt out after the 2014 season.

What I'm worried about is that they would seem to have no leverage...where are they gonna go if WGN doesn't ante up?

Will the other locals be bidding?

Couldn't they just move all of the games to Comcast?

Would create logistical nightmares, especially in April when Cubs, Sox, Hawks and Bulls are all playing.

I doubt that would be much of a problem. They already have all of those teams

Don't they already stagger games onto one of the other channels?

They do, but at the moment there's only one such channel. Wouldn't be enough for a full load of baseball.

Aren't the Cubs and Sox typically on at different times?

With all the night games Wrigley is adding, inasmuch as that's true now, it probably won't be much in the future (except for Fridays).

I don't think so, for the most part. Especially as the Cubs get more night games, there should be plenty of overlap.

And then you have the Hawks and Bulls to deal with in April and possibly May (not sure how many of the Hawks playoff games get local broadcasts).

The number of WGN games this year that fall during the Bulls regular season: 7

For the Hawks the number is 5. I don't think it would be a deal-breaker.

I guess I could be OK with it, as long as the deal doesn't extend their partnership with CSN further than it already is. I want a Cubs network, damnit.

That's gotta be the ultimate goal; I'm expecting a renegotiation of the WGN deal so that it ends when the Comcast one does. I can't imagine that WGN is in any hurry to lose the Cubs and will be looking to keep them, if even just for a few more years.

Ideally WGN signs an extension until then for fair market value, minus the WCIU games which go to Comcast.

Anything that airs on WCIU is a negative for the franchise. If WGN wants those games they need to cough up the money to air them on the Superstation.

I see it as a plus - it keeps games on free TV for fans throughout the midwest. I'm not within range of one of those stations, but I can get the games on an opposition feed - what's the big deal? I like that they are throwing games at folks who can't pony up for an expensive cable package, a rarity in modern big-time sports.

The TV money available far outweighs anything along those lines, especially with a fanbase as big as the Cubs'. They'd be putting themselves at a distinct disadvantage to choose keeping up something like that vs. starting their own channel.

It's an investment in fan outreach, like value dates at the box office.

lol what the hell are you talking about? investment in fan outreach isn't even a thing. value dates are to put people in seats on dates that would otherwise be a difficult sell at full cost. the cubs don't need to take a haircut to pander to some jerk in the boonies using bunny ears to get the games
