Whatever the punishment is for the Saints, I bet Gregg Williams' punishment is worse. I could see him getting banned permanently from the NFL. I'll guess the Saints lose next year's 1st and either a 1st or a 2nd the following season as well.

[expletive] Greg Williams.

Also, the Saints didn't do a very good job of trying to hurt people; they haven't exactly lit people up the past few years. Although they were definitely going after Favre in the NFC Champ game a few years back. Several of those hits were dirty.

And Cutler this year. Blitzing relentlessly with a double digit lead late.

Or it could be that the Saints run a blitz-heavy defense and the Bears line was godawful that game.

of course you're going to defend the saints. but that doesn't really address what raw was saying.

I guess the Saints should have just gone into a prevent for the 4th quarter. It's not like they were up 20 points or something.

1. Does anyone think this Saints thing is isolated to the Saints? I sure as hell don't.

2. Did they actually take out a QB this year?

anthony adams was on the score saying he'd never heard of anything like this happening.

Um, Buddy Ryan did it.

buddy ryan also took a swing at an offensive coordinator during a game and had a green, green prostate by the time adams came into the league. i doubt adams even knows who that is.

first of all, if the bears' line was so terrible, the saints shouldn't have needed to blitz. i read somewhere that gregg williams's defense actually rushes 3 more than any defense in the nfl. second of all, blitzing when you're up a bajillion points in the 4th is just a bitch move and you're trying to hurt people. that's copletely ignoring the fact that bennett was hit in the chest by a helmet and cutler was kicked in the head.

The Saints blitzed more than any other team in football last year.

yes? i don't see how that stops them from rushing 3 more than any other team.

i think what i saw was actually an interview with gregg williams.

just a quick search revealed this from greg cosell:

http://nflfilms.nfl.com/2012/01/10/cosells-watching-the-wild-cards-saints-defense-vs-detroit/

A lot of Saints zone coverage concepts featured 3 man rushes with 8 in coverage. Based on film study I would say the Saints rush 3 as much as or more than any team in the NFL

The penalties are going to be severe. Goodell will use this to try to discourage other teams from doing the same.

Like I indicated earlier, I expect multiple draft picks to be surrendered. The team will be fined between 500k and 1 million.

Williams will be fined and suspended. Multiple players will be fined...and maybe a 1-2 game suspension to the worst offenders. If all I have read is true, Vilma likely faces a 1-2 game suspension.

Loomis will be punished in some capacity. Peyton may escape a 1-2 game suspension, but I can bet he will be fined 100-250K.

I would be very curious to see your arithmetic on how a defense could lead the league in rushing 3 and blitzing at the same time.

Edit: That's strange. This article says the Saints blitzed on a higher percentage of dropbacks than any other team: http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2011/story/_/id/7446379/2012-nfl-playoffs-san-francisco-49ers-ready-time-blitz-happy-new-orleans-saints

I wonder if that stat is based on bringing more than 4 or bringing at least one more than there are men left to protect.

On ESPN 1000 they were saying that Bears players from the Super Bowl team have said (off the record) that they did something similar.

Hopefully Goodell destroys them.

He didn't destroy the Patriots for SpyGate and that was straight up cheating so I dunno what he'll do to the Saints, but obviously with the NFL so concerned lately with concussions and all that the punishment definitely won't be light.

this is straight up cheating, and worse.

because a lot of 3-4 teams rush 4 (which i don't know if that's considered a blitz) and a lot of 4-3 teams rush 4?

What is really going to make things bad for the Saints, in my opinion is...

1. Reducing injuries and dirty hits has been an emphasis lately. Goodell can't be talking about player safety and then look the other way here.

2. The Saints covered it up.

3. The fact that this went on for three years- 2 years of that after they knew the NFL had looked into it.

4. That even when they knew they were being investigated, the GM and HC did nothing to stop it.

5. The Saints have developed a reputation in recent years of doing things their own way and somewhat thumbing their nose at the league.

6. Benson isn't a favorite of other league owners. There will be pressure put on Goodell to drop the hammer.

All of this equals to a perfect storm for the Saints getting heavy duty punishment.

Of course, most of the callers on the local talk radio around here have tried to minimize it, say they should fine the Saints, and that's all.

Without doing research, I'm going to guess the players' union frowns upon performance-based pay schemes like this. Does anyone know (care) if the union does anything about this as well?

And really lets think about this..How often have we heard of teams and players with "dirty" reputations? Is money involved really such a stretch?

I hate the NFL pretending it's a good, wholesome league that would never tolerate such a travesty. I'm still not over them completely sliding under the steroids issue. Basebal went to the Supreme Court for steroids while the NFL became the most popular sport in America. To this day that blows my mind.

Of course they were. It was clear at the time those dirty [expletive] were trying to knock him out and they got away with a few cheap ones. Sharper basically admitted to it at the time accidentally and now that dumbass is trying to deny it.

Burn that franchise to the ground.

Yeah, I think Goodell is going to put a hurt on the Saints. I don't see how he couldn't, given his agenda. I'll be surprised if he doesn't make an example of them.
