That adds up to about 1.2 million more than our estimates across the 6 guys that signed today.

I'll be very surprised if we open the year with BOTH Dewitt and Baker on the roster.

I could see it. Baker is a part-time starter (he should always start somewhere vs. lefties, preferably in place of DeJesus or Stewart) whereas Dewitt is basically the 25th man.

According to Heyman, we're pretty far apart with Garza. We offered 7.95 mil and he wants 10.225. I'm guessing we end up somewhere between 8-9.

I don't think the 10.225 is right. I've seen in a couple articles where Garza actually asked for 12.5, not 10.225. That would make sense if it's true.

I just Googled 'matt garza arbitration' and couldn't find any articles that said it was 12.5.

That is weird. Are there any others out there that don't site an AP or yahoo.com report?

No... the other one I saw (can't find it now for some reason) was from yahoo or AP as well. Those were the only 2 though that had 12.5 which I can see being that if they're "pretty far apart" like Heyman reported.

Based on how widely reported the 10.225 number is, I'm betting the 12.5 is the typo.

Here's a sampling of the reaction over at ESPN.com:

Sir Topem HatHow: is [soto] worth that kind of money? They may as well kept Koye Hill, who played better defensively and if given the chance, could bat .230.

At least we now know Lou Piniellas ESPN.com screen name.

do people think koyie hill played good defense because he's white or something?

Because he couldn't hit but still played, and received praise. Therefore he must be good at defense.

Plus the Cubs won a lot when he played his first couple seasons, and then right as his reputation was growing he had the season where he threw out a bunch of runners. Add in how inconsistent Soto has been (which increases the hype for the backup), and it's pretty easy to see how Hill's reputation has just grown a life of its own.
