Looks like it.

The #Mariners are moving closer to a trade for a young impact hitter, two baseball sources confirmed.

It's a "significant trade,'' says one source. And Brandon League is not part of the return package.

6:36pm: The trade could involve Michael Pineda and Yankees prospect Jesus Montero, as Larry Stone of the Seattle Times has heard "rumblings in that direction" (Twitter link).

This was ion the Misc FA thread but probably deserves its own. Big trade for both teams. Yankees need pitching badly, and the Mariners' crop of good young hitters keeps growing. There are supposedly more players involved.

isn't pineda a pretty major FB pitcher?

whoa... this would be kind of like that garza for delmon young trade. don't see those kinds of trades very often.

on the one hand i think i'd value pineda just a bit more because he's already performed at a high level in the big leagues for a full season, but all signs are that montero will rake. the m's starting pitching really isn't that great right now - there's king felix obviously, but vargas/beavan/furbush is pretty lousy. but they do have hultzen, paxton and taijuan walker in the pipeline with the possibility of all breaking into the bigs by mid to late 2013. wonder what the m's do with smoak and montero... smoak isn't proven but wasn't terrible last year. or are they really the one team out there that thinks montero can catch?

pineda should be good for the yankees, though his numbers will take a hit because he's fly ball-heavy.

pineda and jose campos to #yankees to montero and hector noesi, as greg johns said

i think campos is a better prospect than noesi, so i'd lean toward the yankees winning this trade, but it's close. probably a good deal for both sides given their needs.

Wow -- I would have to side with the Yankees on this one.

Yeah, one has to wonder how many more years Jack Z is going to last at this point.

I love these kinds of trades.

Seattle building nicely.

They should look to move Felix..

JonHeymanCBS Jon Heyman

#yankees tried for #felix before acquiring pineda. #mariners wouldnt budge. #yanks woulda offered montero/banuelos/betances/etc./etc

if "slash" means the yankees would have been willing to trade those three plus more, i definitely would have gone that route and kept pineda. but it's not clear from that tweet.

Felix kind of wasting his prime at the moment with how stacked the Angels & Rangers are.

Trade Felix get Montero/Banuelos/Betances and more. Keep Pineda. Build around Pineda/Hultzon.

Maybe worried about fan interest, but I think most Seattle fans are realistic. They aren't winning anytime soon. I'd rather watch a below average team with a ton of talent rather than the average one they are destined for.

Between this and Kuroda, The Yankees completely change the face of their rotation going from CC/Nova/AJ/Garcia/Hughes to CC/Pineda/Kuroda/Nova/AJ, Hughes, or Garcia. Does this put pressure on the Red Sox to go after a front end starter? Say Matt Garza?

WSR - Unless the Red Sox give us an all-in package, and they reportedly have said Bogaerts and a few others are off-limits, I don't see a package from them that I really love for Garza. Ranaudo as the pitching centerpiece is ... eh.

As for this deal, stunning. My first thought was, highway robbery for the Yankees. Then, the more I pondered it, the more I think that it's a good deal for the Yankees, but I can understand it for the M's. Pineda has an injury history, and he's basically getting by without a change-up right now. There's still more developmental work in some respects, but his fastball/breaking ball are so electric that he can get away with it for now. They've got young pitching in the system (Hultzen/Walker/Paxton trio should, IMO, get them at least 1 quality 2, 2/3 type and probably soon), and Montero, to go with Smoak, starts to give them the young offensive pieces to build around that they simply didn't have available.

Don't get me wrong, overall, I think the Yankees slightly win this for now, but there's enough there to understand why they went this route.

Smoak sucks and doesn't have a position as long if Montero is in the majors.

yeah i understand the deal from the m's perspective. their offense was awful last year. God-awful. last in runs, last in batting average, last in obp (292 team obp!!!), last in slugging. ichiro is old and while ackley is going to be a nice player, he's not a real slugger like they desperately need. montero should become that.

Yankees now have a glut of starting pitchers and could use a DH. How about a swap of bad contracts involving Soriano and Burnett? Edited to say with $$$ and/or a pitching prospect of some value coming back, wish is certainly wishful thinking.

If anything, trying to swing a deal for Phil Hughes would be more up Theo's alley. I wonder what he'd cost.

coming back to where, the cubs? if anything the cubs should be giving up money/prospects in the deal. burnett pitched better than his ERA last year and only has two years left on his deal; soriano has three. at this point i'd be happy to have burnett eat up 150-200 mediocre innings each of the next two years and be out from under soriano's 2014 salary.

I've really liked some of the smaller moves Jack Z has made during his tenure. But all of his big moves have been pretty bad. His medical staff must hate Pineda and his coaching staff must think he's never gonna throw a halfway decent change...

i bet when it's all said and done the mariners win big with this one. i just don't like Pineda long term, and the M's already have plenty of backstock of prospects at pitcher coming up to sell high here. i think seattle knows that in a couple of years the angels will start getting old and expensive and bad, the rangers will level off, and the division will become seattle and oakland's again.

They reportedly still have money to spend, and the hot rumor of Carlos Pena makes some sense. I don't think they are going to want to be contractually tied to a DH through 2014, not with Jeter/ARod aging, unless the Cubs ate the whole Soriano deal and took on the Burnett deal. Until then, going one year at a time may make more sense for them with FA DH pick ups.
