Did I miss Mike Morse getting traded to the Rays?

We're not getting BJ Upton for Soto.

We're certainly not getting Upton+ for Soto, Marmol (AND HIS CONTRACT), and junk.

Where's Reid Brignac in this offer?

Confused him with Matt Joyce for some reason. Not nearly as good, but had a good season last year. I wouldn't expect it to be junk. Soto, Marmol(part of his contract), and a few decent prospects. No quite sure what caliber of prospects it would take.

I could see us making a move for Upton, but not until we know what's happening with Cespedes. He's about the only FA bat in 2013's class with upside. But Tampa knows this as well, so someone's going to have to pay up for him or else they'll take the comp at the end of the year. Which is my guess, because I doubt they'll deal him while in contention personally, unless they're totally overwhelmed.

I know this is an older Soto thread, but it still seems appropriate for the latest Soto/Rays rumor/suggestion out of Tampa Bay:

But from the look of the first two weeks, they may need to go out and find help behind the plate. Serious help.

It sounds as if they are more in the browsing mode now, content with Chris Gimenez and planning to give Jose Lobaton another opportunity when (if?) his sore shoulder feels good enough for him to come off the disabled list sometime next month. Plus, it's a bit early to engage teams in significant trade talks.

But if Lobaton doesn't come back strong, or soon, the Rays will have to look hard for someone to at least share time with veteran Jose Molina....

The three biggest-name catchers considered to be available at some point this season are A.J. Pierzynski of the White Sox, Geovany Soto of the Cubs and Kurt Suzuki of the A's. (Though the typically under-the-radar Rays may be looking elsewhere.)

Despite Soto's early season struggles, you've got to believe he has more value than Pierzynski or Suzuki. Even in a "bad" year in 2011, Soto still managed a 97 OPS+ and a 2.4 WAR in 125 games.

By no means am I saying it's time to "give up" on Soto, but, given the future of the club and the unlikelihood of competitiveness this year, might as well start shopping him now, if teams are interested.

Sarcasm?

Of course.

The Rays are a ray of sunshine for everyone out there (ts), but in AL East country there's alot of "wtf did you think would happen when you pick in the top 5 for a decade?" They've got a point...Price was hyped as the LHP Prior (prospect world is his Prior)) coming out of school...Longoria was arguably the best college prospect bat of the decade especially going into his draft year...Neimann was the most hyped of the Rice trio...Young was ridiculously hyped as a HS bat and landed them Garza, a guy who's performance matched the tools hype...Upton was the #2 overall pick and top HS prospect in a loaded 2002 HS crop (Kazmir, Hamels, Greinke, Fielder, Cain amongst the survivors). It irks me that so many Cub fans want to model them when we have the money to be a much more lasting presence...

Hey, it’s a Geovany Soto tidbit! Bruce Levine reports that, despite his weak overall year, “numerous teams” are interested in the Cubs’ catcher. He’s playing his best baseball at the right time (he’s hitting .306/.359/.472 since June 30, and .242/.309/.435 since returning from knee surgery in mid-June), and might actually be tradable at this point. Levine mentions the Angels by name, who might be looking to take a chance on a hypothetical upgrade at catcher. Don’t get your hopes up for a big return, though. The Cubs *might* be able to squeeze a B prospect out of a Soto deal, but I’m not optimistic.

As far as Chicago’s position players go, numerous teams are interested in Geovany Soto, according to a major league source. Soto is playing his best baseball of the season and would likely be available for the right package. Soto was almost traded to Pittsburgh last July before the Cubs backed out at the last minute. The Angels may be looking to upgrade the offense behind the plate and make a pitch for Soto.

Wouldn't a B or B- prospect be a good return for Soto? I know he said *might*, but lets just say it's possible. From Sickels list (before the season)... Angels had 2 B and 6 B- prospects. They are in order: Garrett Richards/Jean Segura/Taylor Lindsey/Kaleb Cowart/CJ Cron/John Hellweg/Luis Jimenez/Nick Maronde.

Yes, I'd take any one of those guys for Soto straight up.

Me too. I'd rather have Clevenger and Castillo catching anyway.

I'm not sure that they mean a B rating on Sickles' scale. Usually B prospects are "the next tier" of prospects after you get past an organization's Top 10 or so. I don't think Soto could fetch any of those prospects listed (but I'd love to be wrong!).
