Broncos DC Dennis Allen to be the next head coach of the Raiders. That makes him the 2nd Aggie head coach in the NFL (Gary Kubiak is the other). I wonder how many schools have more than one.

Eastern Illinois University has both Shannahan and Sean Payton (and Brad Childress would make 3 if he ever gets another job)

So 2 then.

Interesting. Never would have guessed it.

Colts hire Chuck Pagano, formerly the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7503273/chuck-pagano-hired-indianapolis-colts-coach

It's, of course, a crap-shoot with assistant coaches becoming head coaches, but I am pleased. And he can't help but be an upgrade over Jim Caldwell, who was utterly clueless and one of the worst head coaches in the (modern era, at least) history of the NFL.

There's a difference between then and than. Just sayin'.

That's 1-3 years of a Big Ten education

I only had 1 and I can get it right!

so i guess they are going 3-4, then.

Tampa Bay to hire Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. Also Mike Sherman is reportedly going to be the new Dolphins OC.

I'm surprised the luster hasn't come off of Schiano by now and knocked down his NFL head coaching status.

That's certainly an interesting question. Obviously, you hire a 3-4 coach you expect to play a 3-4. However, the Colts do not have the personnel -- not even remotely -- to play a 3-4. A transition to 3-4 may seem likely, but it's surely going to be a slow(ish) one. I'm expecting mainly 4-3 for next year, at least.

At his press conference today, Pagano said he wouldn't fit square pegs into round holes and would not force a move towards a Baltimore-style defense. He said he might use both 3-4 and 4-3 looks; but also mentioned that if Mario Williams can play OLB in a 3-4, then Dwight Freeney (I'm dubious here) and Robert Mathis potentially could as well.

The Cleveland Browns have hired former Vikings head coach Brad Childress as their offensive coordinator, a league source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen on Friday.

good hire, wish the bears had him.

Trust me, you don't.

So a week or so after retiring from the Steelers, apparently Bruce Arians is back.

Bruce Arians' retirement that wasn't from the Pittsburgh Steelers ended on Saturday when he was hired to be the new offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, according to various reports including ESPN.com.

Seems like a really good hire.

I'm quite pleased, again. Arians' was QB coach for the Colts in Peyton Manning's first three years.

Of course, this is a bit odd since the Colts still have/had an offensive coordinator, Clyde Christensen. Christensen is evidently going to be demoted back to WR coach for the Colts or end up with the Bears as QB coach.

Incredibly rigid with his system like Martz. Wouldn't adjust and made Tarvaris Jackson (who was his pet) become a west coast QB despite not being an accurate passer. Jackson's strengths were his mobility and big arm and his footwork always fell apart in the pocket but that was ignored. Even when he often had 8 in the box due to Adrian. Play calling was incredibly bland and predictable until he had #4 who freelanced. Insisted on zone blocking scheme which wasn't a good fit for the huge maulers he brought in on the line.

He probably won't have any personnel say as a coordinator but he was Dusty Bakereque in that regard. Stuck with a lot of "his veteran guys" who sucked even when younger guys showed promise.

fair enough, but i can't help but notice he's had some big years out of his quarterbacks.

He's not a total bum but I think that's been more due to the talent he had. With the Eagles he had McNabb in his prime and Andy Reid was the play caller. With the Vikings he was given the best RB in the game, a very good OL that forced 8 in the box as much as any team in the league. The QB play was poor because he wanted to fit a round peg into a square hole (Tarvaris) with over the hill journeymen as the competition.

In '09 Favre was pure magic and he had Adrian in his prime. He made Rice a top 5 WR, Shiancoe a top 5 TE. He can get some credit for that but he and Brett constantly butted heads and he hated Favre calling audibles and freelancing which usually worked. Don't think that would be a good fit for Cutler. Also don't think his offense fits Cutler's strengths.

Not sure how their running game/passing game thing will work but Tice sure as hell knows how to build a quality running game.
