oh i don't care that either team made it, but the bengals didn't beat anybody good all year and houston is missing their starting qb, top pass rusher and their star wr is a cripple.

Well, they did beat Tennessee, which ended up being the only one that really mattered in the grand scheme of things.

i have a hard time assessing a team that lost to the colts and jaguars as a "good team"

They weren't, but they were the next best team. That made the Bengals the obvious 6th best team.

Final AFC West standings:

x-Denver 8-8

Oakland 8-8

San Diego 8-8

Kansas City 7-9

Pretty close to the most mediocre division ever.

SD apparently is eliminated on the "Common opponents" tiebreaker. They are almost certainly the best team in the division.

They were also all 3-3 in the division with each team going 1-1 against the others.

Denver won the tiebreaker by going 4-4 in the common opponents (i.e. against the NFC North and AFC East) while the Raiders and Chargers were both 3-5.

Hahaha the AFC West is such a joke.

They were 2 games under .500, and that was while playing two of the better divisions as their out of division play.

From Jamine Sadry from 105.3 FM in DFW.

Spoke to a homeless man who "refused" to speak to me because he doesn't do things for free, but kept speaking to me anyway. Said he doesn't like Tony Romo, but rather, Jesus. When I said, "Oh, so you like Tim Tebow," homeless man was not amused; said that true Christians can't play a brutal sport like football. Homeless man confirmed to me that Tim Tebow IS NOT Jesus. Very nerdy restaurant manager tried to be assertive and kick me out; I finally left and accused him of not loving Jesus. So ends my audio expedition...

Remember when a bunch of Bear fans said Stafford wasn't that good?

Oops.

Aren't you the guy who thinks Tebow is a competent QB!?

ETA: I notice I'm late on this but in my defense, I wasn't home and I feel this point should be driven home.

Did Matt Flynn just put Rodgers' MVP in jeopardy when combined with Brees' day today?

i think he solidified the idea that the difference between jay cutler and aaron rodgers might not be so great as thought.

Tom Brady isn't as great as initially thought either because of the Cassel year a few seasons ago.

True. (ok, there are other reasons as well)

About Flynn's impressive day-

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7413505/nfl-does-matt-flynn-week-17-performance-mean?addata=2009_insdr_mod_nfl_xxx_xxx

Football Outsiders' play-by-play database goes back to 1993, and Flynn's game against Detroit ranks as the 15th-best game in that timeframe. The best game belongs to Trent Green, who in 2002 threw five touchdowns against a Miami team that only gave up 20 passing scores all year. Four former Super Bowl winners make the top-15 list: Brady (five times), Brees (three times), Peyton Manning and Roethlisberger.

and....

Going a little further down the list, down to the 260-DYAR level, gives us more of the same: Pro Bowl quarterback after Pro Bowl quarterback, from Rodgers to Matt Hasselbeck to Carson Palmer to Rich Gannon to Steve Young to Drew Bledsoe to Bobby Hebert to Troy Aikman to Neil O'Donnell to Daunte Culpepper to Jeff Garcia. Obviously, some of those names are a lot better than others, but with the exception of Mitchell, every quarterback who has ever played even one game anywhere near Flynn's level played in Hawaii at least once in his career.

It's only one game, but the simple fact is that mediocre quarterbacks are almost never this good.

and finally about whether the Packers can get anything for him-

Flynn is about to enter free agency, but the Packers would never be foolish enough to let him walk away for nothing. They'll likely franchise him and trade him away for picks, just like New England did with Matt Cassel, though there is inherent risk in that decision because Flynn could opt to accept the tag. The Pats sent Cassel and Mike Vrabel to Kansas City for a second-round pick. Given how many teams are desperate for quality young quarterbacks to build around -- Seattle, Miami and Washington, to name some of the top candidates -- the Pack are bound to get more than that for Flynn. Any team that gets Flynn for a first-round pick may well have gotten quite a bargain.

i have to wonder if what happened with cassel would make teams reluctant to deal a high pick for flynn. cassel came from a similar situation (strong performance on a team loaded with offensive weapons, though he played most of the year whereas flynn has had just a couple of games in relief). cassel's performance for kc has been pretty mediocre. i suspect a lot of teams will be asking if flynn's big numbers were mostly due to playing on a really good, well-coached offense.

The problem with franchising Flynn is that we have two other viable players that could be worthy of the tag, with Finley and Scott Wells entering free agency. That would be an extremely risky move to franchise a backup, while letting two rather important parts test the waters of the open market.

Depending on what Flynn would get in free agency, I think the Packers could end up getting a compensatory pick in the 3rd round for the following season.

I think Flynn can be a serviceable starter in the league, but I think teams are going to be hesitant to judge him on one start against a team with an extremely banged up secondary. The Kevin Kolb mistake should linger in the minds of teams who need a starter.

Schefter in another article seems to indicate that Green Bay will just let Flynn walk and take the supplemental pick rather than risk the franchise tag. Shefter says that Flynn will want to pick where he plays and could simply sign the franchise tag and Green Bay would be on the hook for a one year salary in the 17-20 million range. So, I guess there will be some intrigue involved with everyone speculating exactly what will happen with him.

My guess is a team like Washington or Seattle that is drafting too far down to get Luck or Griffen will get Flynn with a 5/50 contract with about half of that guaranteed.

You want Redskins fans to read that and get upset, don't you

I really don't want Flynn going to the Redskins. He's one of my favorite LSU players of all-time but if he goes to Washington, I will have to hope he gets broken in half or something like that.

I went to Jets/Dolphins, wow, that was hilariously bad football. Not high school ugly football like Bears/Broncos, but legitimately hilariously bad. On one Jets drive the teams took turns with illegal procedure/offsides penalties early on, then the Jets added two more illegal procedures. There were 7 turnovers. Sanchez threw 2 INTs to defensive linemen. There was another pass caught by an offensive linemen and apparently fumbled (eventaully overturned) before Jason Taylor returned it for a TD despite fumbling it himself in a game whose main feature was over the top ridiculous tributes to Jason Taylor, and him going out of his way to be seen on the jumbotron at all times (he never stood by anybody and seemingly only wore his helmet during plays). Plus, Dolphins fans are probably the most pathetic in sports, but they do provide an ample supply of scantily clad off duty trophy wives/strippers in the audience.

Even if we get something good for Flynn which is very possible, I have a hard time still wanting to tag him over Finley.

Norv Turner and the Lord of No Rings to remain in San Diego.

LOL, Norv cannot be killed by conventional weapons.

fun fact: in 885 snaps, (pro-bowler) BJ Raji had just 13 tackles this season

He regressed in a major way this year. The loss of Cullen Jenkins probably affected him more than anybody else on the defense.
