TE james hanna just ran a 4.42 at 252 pounds.

watch highlights of him from the 2010 game against OSU. He was outrunning DBs all over the place. No idea why we didn't use him more, it's not like his hands were terrible or anything.

yeah, wherever he was projected i'm assuming he just moved himself up significantly.

he's dropped 2 now

So explain to me why the top 2 QB prospects are not throwing at the combine, and why pro scouts let the kids dictate this stuff

They throw at pro days where they have a more comfortable environment. The scouts may very well prefer it that way.

Which is fine, it just rubs me the wrong way when they go out of their way to announce that they're not going to be participating in the same activities as the other prospects at their position

From the player's perspective, as MR said, it's an unfamiliar environment, with unfamiliar receivers, sometimes running routes you're not as used to throwing. For the top QBs in the draft, they're not going to improve their stock by throwing, so why take the chance that you hurt your stock?

From the team's perspective, what are you going to do? Are you going to instate a rule where you won't draft a player as highly who doesn't throw at the combine? I would expect scouts would prefer to see the QB perform in less-than-comfortable circumstances, but the combine isn't going to make the difference in your evaluation of a guy like Luck, so overall it's not that big a deal that they sit out.

Not that I disagree with you, but I think the combine is pretty dumb for the top players to take part in doing real football drills. I get wanting to find out their real height and times on various physical drills, but these guys already have their own pro days and there's enough video out there for teams scouts to look at that they have enough evidence between those two to judge their football skills.

Yeah, honestly for the top-end players, getting accurate weight and height measurements might be as helpful or moreso than watching them in drills vs air. You do have a ton of tape on all of these top athletes on the field, but you can't tell whether a QB is 6'4 or 6'2 for sure until you measure them yourself, since the schools can't be trust in theirs.

Mike Adams only did 19 reps at the bench press.

Yeah, but he has long arms (good for an OT) which will hurt his bench.

Billick even pointed out that teams have sliding scales that they use to evaluate the bench press of different O-linemen. 19 for a long armed guy is much better than 19 for a short armed guy. Still seems a bit low to me, though.

By the way, I think I say this every year but NFL Network's coverage is really, really good. Watching Mayock, Davis, Lombardi, Saturday, and Billick analyze the combine today has been really enjoyable. NFL Network is so much better than ESPN (except NFL Matchup, it was really good).

cory harkey had a bad workout. he was the one who was not like the others. fat, goofy-looking, and slow.

Harkey had no business starting on a bad UCLA team, let alone being invited to the Combine.

FYI, Luck was rumored to want to throw but the Colts advised him not to. My guess is they want him to wait until his pro day when their coaches (OC/QB coach) can dictate the throws he makes. Gives them a chance to see Luck make plays in their offensive scheme somewhat.

As for Harkey, Raisin...yeah, I don't know what's up with him. He's climbed a lot of draft boards in the last couple weeks. I can't figure why or how this was possible.

As for Adams, he's not Shaq. A 300lb man should be able to hit 20+ reps regardless of how long his arms are. But to be honest, I don't put a lot of stock into the combine stuff other than to see who's possibly not as big, fast, or strong as I thought they looked in the college season.

That and his game tape shows plenty of strength. He'll probably have to answer questions about what happened there during one or two interviews. Maybe it's just a conditioning problem.

I still think he's a prototypical RT prospect, though I've never really thought of him as a first rounder (maybe late).

some dude did 51 back before sneaky was born

I believe Paea has the record for a drafted player. I've heard 51, but he went undrafted so it's not a record or that they don't count it. Still if a guy did 51 at the combine, you would think they would make that the record instead of the 49 that Paea put up last year...

It was Justin Ernest back in 1999 btw who did this...
