I looked around and realized he didn't have his own thread. I'd imagine his trading would make a lot of sense for the Cubs right now as there is significant demand for closers and the Cubs could potentially replace him in-house. I'm actually surprised I haven't heard much talk of him being moved as of late.

I can't help but wonder if Marmol is what Epstein uses to get Headley without having to give up a noteworthy prospect.

Santana would be awesome. He probably deserves his own thread. That deal doesn't make lots of sense for the Angels though, they just traded for Ianetta. I'm sure they think they're set at catcher now. On the other hand, I'd send Marmol and more to them for Santana.

I can't see that because I figure the Pads would want us to pick up some of his contract. And while we'll need to pick up some cash on some others' deals if we were to trade them, Marmol certainly isn't one of those guys. If he's dealt, my guess is it's to a big market team.

Good catch forgot about Ianetta.

I still don't get how picking up some of the tab would be a problem. It'd be a great deal for both the Cubs and Padres to do some form of a Marmol/Headley swap. The Cubs pay half of Marmol's salary each year (3.5 next year and 4.4 in 2013) and fill a major need at third base without adding substantial salary (Headley's salary fills most, all, or just a little more than the Marmol savings). The Padres gain a potentially premiere closer (plus likely multiple other prospects) without adding to payroll at all - since they'd basically be paying what they would have paid to Headley to Marmol.

I still think concerns over Marmol's arm health would be the biggest obstacle to that potential deal.

According to Stark, the teams looking for closers are the Reds, Mets, Pads, Angels, and Red Sox. The Rangers and Rays could add one as well, but it'd have to be the right guy. On the other hand, here are the closers left on the market: Francisco Rodriguez. Ryan Madson, Frank Francisco, Francisco Cordero, and Jon Rauch. So if we're going to trade Marmol, it better happen soon, or musical chairs will take over and teams needs get filled.

Apparently the Rox and Padres are discussing Huston Street. I think the Cubs should step in and try and swing a Marmol for Headley deal before they get another closer. I think Marmol is probably the Cubs best chip in a potential deal, provided Theo and Jed want Headley.

Sounds like it's a done deal...Street for a PTBNL.

Between Santos for a soft-tossing AA potential 3 starter, Street for a PTBNL, and Francisco for 2/12, the closer market has cooled off a lot after the Bell/Papelbon signings.

To be fair, Santos has only been a closer for this past season and it was only his 2nd season in the league, Francisco isn't really a true closer and has been in and out of the role for the past 3 seasons (and also hasn't exactly been lights out), and Street has been hit or miss his entire career. Bell and Papelbon are legitimate closers with a history of sustained success (and health). It would make sense guys like them got bigger deals.

Street will probably do well in Petco, though.

Bowden tweeted Boston is in contact with us about Marmol, Oakland about Bailey, and keeping tabs on Madson. Madson will cost the most obviouslu, which could deter them, if they actually are concerned with the luxury tax. Bailey is obviously the cheapest, but he'd cost a lot more in prospects than Marmol would. I wouldn't mind eating some salary on his contract for THIS season, if it meant we could get one of Lavarnway, Midllebrooks, Cecchini, Brentz, Ranaudo, or Jacobs.
