Damn. I know Santos being under contract for seemingly forever helps his trade value, Molina would have walked into our system as the top right handed starter prospect we have. I wonder if we could have gotten him for Marmol?

jonmorosi: #WhiteSox acquire Nestor Molina from #BlueJays for Sergio Santos.

Molina has some decent numbers from AA last season...

Seriously, not a bad deal for the White Sox, and I'd be pretty happy if the Cubs land a similar return for Marmol.

The Cubs’ goal at the meetings is to add pitching depth and position players. San Diego third baseman Chase Headley is on their want list as is Colorado’s Ian Stewart.

That pretty much sums it up. All we need is pitchers and position players, but other than that were good.

We certainly don't need a DH!

WHAT ABOUT INTERLEAGUE PLAY?!

Pretty good deal. Could be a sell high for the Sox, then again, the Jays could be getting an excellent deal on a closer.

2012 1 mil

2013 2.75 mil

2014 3.75 mil

2015 6 mil team option 750K buyout

2016 8 mil team option 750K buyout

2017 8.75 mil team option 750K buyout

We already have a DH. We owe him 52 mil over the next 3 years.

MDGonzales: KW "this is the start of a rebuilding." !!!

If we lose out on Pujols and Fielder, would trying to get them to pick up a lot of Dunn's contract be something to consider or are folks too scared from this past season's numbers?

Absolutely, positively not. If he has to play the field, he's barely an average overall player even when his bat is good.

The gap between Soriano and Dunn last season in fWar was bigger than the gap between Albert Pujols and Darwin Barney. No interest at all.

Agreed.

Besides this, how pissed you think Paul Konerko is right now for resigning with a team that went from "All In" to "The Start of a Rebuilding" instead of being a difference maker with the Angels or some other team he could have made the post season with?

The difference being that Dunn could rebound and pay off big time whereas Darwin Barney is Darwin Barney. Still, depending on how much salary we take on and what else theyd want in return its a huge risk.

The upside is that Dunn still sucks so bad you can waive him with a clear conscience. The downside is that he hits just enough that you feel like you need him in the lineup and have to put up with his horrific LF defense.

Wait, I thought the Dunn hypothetical was based on the idea that the Cubs miss out on both Pujols and Fielder, which seemingly would mean Dunn would be, almost out of necessity on several levels, playing 1B and not LF.

D'oh, I wasn't thinking that through.

His defense there is just as bad, though.

Eh, looking at his dWAR on BR I'm actually surprised at how NOT horrible defensively he's been more often than not. I was expecting a lot worse. Yeah, he's had some brutal years in there, but I was expecting wall-to-wall awfulness.

I think I might prefer LaHair making the team to Adam Dunn.

Try fangraphs. They'll give you more what you are looking for there.

But don't you think that Konerko had to look at the team last year and think that the window is only 1 year anyway, 2 tops. I don't feel bad for Konerko at all. I think if the White Sox were in real rebuild mode they could easily turn Konerko for a good prospect. I think his contract is only in the 13 mill range for 2 more years. He is still a very good middle of the order hitter.

this is pretty much how defensive statistics work. just shop around until you find the one that supports whatever you want to argue.

I still prefer it to the old days, when a player's precise defensive value was the difference between his offense and how much the person making the argument liked him.

A Dunn collapse might have been able to be predicted, but I don't think anyone would've ever assumed it would be this bad. There's no way a guy with his skillset can just fall of the face of the Earth like that. Maybe a decline in power to 20-30 homers and a .230AVG or something sure, I could see that, but his season last year was so terrible it almost has to be an outlier, right?

Taking a chance on Dunn would be contingent on two things...

1) The White Sox are paying more of that contract

2) You assume he'll bounce back to at least what Carlos Pena was capable of doing last season for less than what we paid Carlos Pena.

Hypothetically speaking, if we could get away with Dunn at $5-$7 million a year and he was putting up similar offensive numbers to Pena last season, would that be worth a gamble? Or would his defense at 1B be so bad that it makes that price too much still?

If his bat speed is gone it totally can. He can still walk because his eyes are good but if he can't catch up with fastball on a regular basis he's done.
