A career .072 IsoD, and he maintained that even in his bad year. I certainly like that on a team that once again fell to the bottom of the barrel in walks last year and already got rid of their three of their four most patient bats.

I know for a fact that David Dejesus' personal hitting coach is in Chicago. I know this because I used to go to him. So he's obviously very familiar with the area and came at a slightly discounted price thanks to his bad 2011 season.

I like the move for the most part.

Something tells me this move wouldn't be getting universal praise around here if Hendry was still at the helm.

I echo whoever said it's like having two Marlon Byrds on the team.

Because Hendry would have given him 3/35 with a 15 mil player option and full NTC. I'm of course being facetious. Mostly.

This could also be the first chess piece to be moved in riding us of Soriano.

It certainly will be an interesting couple of weeks. I'm on the edge of my seat.

Not a fan. Nothing against DeJesus who's basically Jacksons floor but even if we do move Byrd or Soriano it probably means either Jackson's blocked or we're out of the Cespedes sweepstakes.

he's jackson's FLOOR?

I wish.

You're saying that Jackson's worst case scenario is a solid major league career hovering around an .800 OPS with solid defense? I wish.

I honestly don't see how it means any of those things. Byrd can be benched and the AA outfield still has plenty of openings.

Yeah, I really don't think Cespedes makes the immediate jump to the majors. More likely he spends at least a few months in the minors.

He'll make $4.25 million each of the next two years while the $6.5 million option includes a $1.5 million buyout. While DeJesus figures to serve as the starting right fielder next season, the Cubs could have more flexibility if they find a taker for Alfonso Soriano. The 31-year-old is coming off a down season, but has a .284/.356/.421 career batting line and is regarded as a skilled and versatile defender. The lefty-hitter should benefit from a fantasy perspective by leaving O.co Coliseum behind. It's a nice buy-low signing by the Cubs' new front office.

It definitely gives me hope that better things are on the horizon. Team Epsteins game plan has been to acquire young players who can help us win now, but mostly for the future. DeJesus doesn't exactly fit that mold especially on a 2 year deal.

haha, jackson's floor is that he strikes out 90 times in 200pa and we don't hear from him again until 2013, when he does the same thing again.

i like to think dejesus can beat that.

@BruceMiles2112: #Fangraphs has DeJesus' WAR at 2.2 for 2011. James' projection for 2012 is .271/.349/.399. Big change in ballpark factors, though.

I guess this shows that the regime expects to contend in the next 1-2 years, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered with signing DeJesus. Maybe this points to the Cubs putting in a real offer on Pujols/Fielder.

In terms of wOBA and RF defense, this almost amounts to resigning (a younger) Fukudome at a cut rate.

i really don't think we're going to punt 2012/13, but i don't know that this is proof of that. even if we were going to throw the seasons away, it's not like we'd say "gonna be bad either way, let's make the budget 105 million dollars and see if tyler colvin really can get on base less than 20% of the time over the course of a full season."

Kevin Goldstein doesn't think DeJesus is an upgrade over Fukudome.

I'd agree, except that DeJesus is basically Fukudome from 3 years ago, except for 4 million instead of 14 million.

Whether they go balls out this offseason or not, they were never going to just allow a team full of bad minor leaguers and expiring veterans play out the string next year.

I'd actually like to see Soriano stay and platoon with Dejesus.

Last year Soriano was at: 271 .312 .500 .812 against LHP.

Dejesus has a similar career OPS against RHP: .292 .368 .447 .815

It's a lot of money to be playing for the small part of the platoon but if the other option is to move him and eat most of the costs then I'd rather capitalize on what he still does well.

Or maybe it shows that our outfield is a dumpster fire, there's not really any blue chip outfield options in free agency. When the biggest buzz outfield free agent is a guy who will likely start out the year in the minors, it should tell you something.

DeJesus is a type B FA. That still matters this offseason, right? I keep confusing which aspects of the CBA take effect immediately.
