Not sure what's going on in the corner OF market. CFs are selling like hot cakes, but corners seem to be untouched. While there must be some interest in Soriano, the FA market features Swisher, Ross, and Young. Depending on how much money these guys are asking for, they're all younger than Soriano, and will only cost money. Swisher's the only one I could see lending a big time contract. Ross and Young may not match Soriano's production, but if they're going to cost, say 2/15-3/25, that's likely more attractive than 2/10+prospects for Soriano, and it's hard to blame them.

I am guessing that if Soriano is traded it will be at or near the break when someone needs a bat.

Could be because of an injury or someone's Plan A failed. Doesn't make much sense to deal anything when you can sign someone similar in free agency and lose nothing.

If the Angels get anything of value for Wells, and we can't move Soriano that will suck.

per ABTY, the Angels are willing to eat a lot more of Wells' contract and they're also willing to take back a bad contract for a nice return.

Unless the bad contract they're taking in return is worse than Wells, there's no reason they should expect anything else in return.

While the Phillies are loaded with bad contracts, they're all attached to players they need, and pretty much all of them are better than Wells. Whatever they're willing to take on of Wells contract, we should be willing to pick up of Soriano for a useful return.

The more I look at our position players, 40 man roster situation and our potential lineup, the more I am appreciating what Soriano brings to the table. If we do trade him then it will almost have to be almost a straight up trade unless we are willing to take back non 40 man guys. Losing his bat in the lineup leaves a pretty gaping hole in the middle. I love what we have done with our pitching staff and all but it kinds of limits the type of returns (multi player deals)we can get for guys like Garza, Soriano, Marmol, and hypotheetically Shark and barney.

Most of the time Soriano is the gaping hole in the middle. It's not his fault he's overpaid though.

I was confused at first too, so I added the quote to help clarify.

According to Bowden, there's a standing offer on the table for Soriano, that the Phils are waiting to see where Bourn signs, before moving forward on it.

Does this mean that the Phillies are waiting to see if Bourn signs with a team that would then have an extra outfielder for trade, liike the Diamondbacks?

There was speculation on Domonic Brown being the return for Soriano, has anyone heard anything else on this?

If I think real hard, I wonder if signing Bourn would sort of bleed the market to facilitate a Soriano trade. Add in a Garza for Olt trade, as has also been speculated, and we have:

Bourn

DeJesus

Castro

Rizzo

Brown

Olt

Castillo

Barney

Samardzija/Jackson/Baker/Villanueva/Wood/Feldman

Marmol/Fujikawa/Camp/Russell/Rondon/Bowden/loser of #5 SP

A lot of questions here, but I'll add one more: If Toronto is in the market for Garza, after their trades what type of return would be realistic?

Posted
I do think signing Bourn would help Soriano's market. So would signing Marcum, in helping with Garza's. That said, I don't want to trade Soriano right now. Trade DeJesus instead. Make the Garza deal, then, how much more than Baez, would it take to land Upton?

Toronto's system has been depleted a ton obviously. Maybe Gose and one, of yheir TJS guys, like Drabek or Hutchison? Sanchez seems like the SP they've decided to keep. Osuna is too far away and lacks a bigtime ceiling. Not thinking the Toronto mention was anything more thsn old, recycled info.

ABTY over at PSD several weeks ago said our FO isn't really interested in Domonic Brown. I would still like to trade for him because of his upside. I'm not sure how realistic all of this Garza for Olt talk is. But getting Brown + a good spec and then Olt would be a fun young team to watch. A roll of the dice with upside, a nice fresh restart with alot of new young talent.

If not for Brown, let's speculate who from the Phillies for Soriano? Anyone else on their MLB roster? All prospects? I really don't know about the MLB roster much.

FWIW...

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes that the Cubs "will need a player of note in return" if they're going to trade Alfonso Soriano and assume a majority of his contract.

Cafardo says that Cubs president Theo Epstein "has come to realize what a tremendous teammate Soriano is and how willing he is to help younger players," which has enhanced the outfielder's value in Epstein's eyes. The report adds that Soriano will only accept a trade to an East Coast club.

I could see Phillip Aumont hughlighting the package. Phil's are in win now mode, and they coukd send over Aumont plus a low level/high ceiling but not their top 15-20 prospect as well as something like a John Mayberry or Tyson Gillies, with us sending something fringy or big league ready their way.

Yeah, Soriano’s contract wasn’t a deal by any stretch, but he’s actually come pretty close to earning his keep. Since he signed with the Cubs he’s had 19.7 WAR while earning $97 million so far. That works out to $4.9 million per win, which isn’t too far out of line with what free agents have been paid over the last six years.

Sure, there is not any surplus value in his contract, but to call it an albatross is pretty unfair. His contract isn’t in the same league as Wells ($11.8 million/win), A-Rod($7.4/win, six years to go), or Zito’s ($16.5/win).
