@jonmorosi: #Rangers looking at outfielders on trade market. Story with @Ken_Rosenthal: http://t.co/wMOBE36Z @MLBONFOX

I wonder if they'd be interested in one of the best defensive outfielders in the game, who's having a damn good year with the bat.

From Phil Rogers in today's Tribune:

Soriano + LaHair + Soto + $22 million to the Rays for Carlos Pena or Luke Scott (obviously Scott would be a better option for us) + Chris Archer + Tim Beckham + 2-3 more prospects.

Pena/ Scott have expiring contracts after this year. LaHair becomes 1B/DH for Rays. Money was based on receiving Pena, might need to be adjusted if Scott is received instead.

Just when you think Phil Rogers has reached the peak of stupidity, he comes up with this gem.

I would love it if this trade would happen. We could then try to flip Pena to the Dodgers along with Dempster or Garza. Unfortunatley, last I checked The Rays had not yet replaced Andrew Friedman with a chimpanzee.

Totally plausible.

Well thought out.

I believe that scenario is accurate to within one tenth of a plausibility unit.

Hey, we're making progress! Someone finally realized that Soriano has value and the Cubs don't need to pay his entire salary while getting nothing in return.

Alfonso Soriano's name has surfaced in the Cubs' discussions with the Dodgers, but the Cubs might prefer to wait until the offseason and make a better deal. The veteran is on pace to hit 31 homers and post a .831 OPS. After this season, he'll have two-years and $36MM remaining and the Cubs could find him a home in the AL if they pay that down to about $12MM per year.

I guess the Rays, who have been when of the smartest clubs when it comes to buying and selling talent, will suddenly take on one of the worst contracts in baseball history inorder to rid themselves of Pena.

it may be irrational, but i have this overwhelming confidence that theo and jed are going to just kill it over the next few days. i think they've got all kinds of [expletive] going on with all kinds of players/teams.

obviously the rays wouldn't do that, but soriano isn't really one of the worst contracts in baseball anymore.

i could see a blockbuster deal going down with dempster and garza and possible soto/soriano going to one team.

wouldn't be surprised to see them pull something out of their asses with guys like maholm/camp/johnson either.

If I put the over/under at 4.5, you guys see more or less trades from us between now and the deadline? I'll take the over personally. Dempster, one of Garza or Maholm, Soto, Reed, and Baker.

even though it's been quiet, I really think Soriano is gone. If they're really not going to be giving out any big contracts this offseason, this could be a really good chance to eat most of the money and get an asset back for soriano while he's actually playing well. if carlos lee was good enough to get gould, i find it hard to believe that there aren't teams willing to give up a legit prospect and 2-4 million for a 2.8+ war outfielder.
