Am I missing something (I'll admit my sarcasm meter isn't as good as it once was) or did you miss something? This was already covered.

You didn't miss a thing, I don't think. In fact, now I feel like I missed something. This got covered? Adonde? I want to see some of the comparisons this guy is getting so I can dream comparison dreams.

Hey guys who do you think this guys upside is similar to? Maybe someone like Justin Upton?

No one wants to answer these comp questions it seems.

I think Justin Upton is a bad word or something.

Can't get quite that excited until the CC-Meter hits 100%.

(I know we're not supposed to attack posters, and I apologize to you mods in advance.)

You're officially the worst.

Have you guys heard of that Cuban Jorge Soler? I think the Cubs should go after him....what do you think?

I might be wrong here and I haven't really looked it up.. but I think it is spelled Solar

Just to babble some more on this...The Cubs landed exactly the two Cubans I wanted them to land. The highly talented, touted LHP and then another 5 tool OF who is a notch up athletically from our best 5 tool guy right now (Jackson) and way ahead of guys like Golden and Dunston Jr., with way less of a bust factor. Plus he's the same age as those really young guys...

I don't mind 2012 making it two years in a row I'm infinitely more interested in the farm system than the big league club...Maybe there'll be some actual breakouts this year (cough*Vitters*cough).

so is this how this is going to go?

12- some portion of 27.5 million (and absolutely in the minors all year)

13- some portion of 27.5 million (and almost certainly in the minors all year)

14- some portion of 27.5 million (and hopefully in the majors, but not on opening day)

15- some portion of 27.5 million (in the majors all year from now on)

16- third year of mlb service, cubs set salary, must be at least 80% of 2015 salary

17- first year arbitration, must be at least 80% of 2016 salary

18- second year arbitration, must be at least 80% of 2017 salary

19- third year arbitration, must be at least 80% of 2018 salary

20- free agent

If it is Solar, then all of the baseball people, and news people for that matter, are spelling it wrong. I just did a search for Jorge Solar and got nothing baseball related. Got a ton when I spelled it Soler.

Unless he either takes off immediately in the minors or takes a slightly more conservative route, yes, that's what it is sounding like.

pardon my ignorance, but say it's a 4 year major league deal. he doesn't become a free agent after those four years, does he?

Unless there is a clause in the contract that says he will (like the one Cespedes and Fukudome got) than no. It will be like what is happening to Samardzija now. If he doesn't have enough service time for arbitration (which seems likely), then the Cubs will be able to cut his last years salary by the full 20% if they want to, or they can choose to non-tender him at that point. Unless there is that clause though, he'd be under Cubs control for the 6 years of major league service time just like every prospect.

Still don't get it 100%. Is the basic jist that no matter what, he's under our control for 6 years after his big league debut no matter what? I guess my main confusion about these types of deals is what they mean by major league deal if he'll be in the minors and not even on the 40 man. Does it just mean that he'll be getting paid more as opposed to standard minor league salary?

Seriously, do you have any capacity for reading comprehension? This has been discussed ad nauseum in the Cespedes thread. Unless the contract specifically stipulates that the player is entitled to free agency at the end of the contract, the team has control of him for six major league seasons unless they give up that right by releasing him. And yes, a major league deal means he's on the 40 man. You don't have to be at any specific level in the minors to be on the 40 man.

Now, go read (and comprehend some things while you're at it) before you post anything else today. Or, just go away altogether. I'd be down with that option.

That's how I understand it, but honestly, my grasp of baseball contract structure is not too hot.

Assuming he's not in the majors until after April 2014, he won't be a free agent until 2021. 2017 could possibly be the Cubs setting his salary, depending on whether he's a super 2(top 1/6 of service time for players with 2-3 years service time) or not. Gut instinct is that he won't be.

As I understand it, 1 year of ML service time is 172 days in MLB (minus any minor league assignment of 20 days or more), so unless his '14 call-up was very early in the season and he stuck for the remainder of the season, he wouldn't accrue a full year of service time until the following year.

So ideally:

13 - 9M

14 - 2.9M

15 - 2.6M

16 - 2.08M

17 - 2.5M (Just a sign of good faith, could be as low as 1.82M)

18 - arb 1

19 - arb 2

20 - arb 3

21 - FA
