No Flaherty, Rhee, or Antigua? Flaherty is a shocker, if you ask me. Maybe he's part of the compensation package? Because he'll be taken for sure otherwise. I think Rhee will be taken as well, in all honesty. Antigua is a guy who would probably be returned, but I wish all 3 of these guys were protected. We can still trade them before the rule 5 draft though, right?

It really doesn't make much sense to me that those 3 wouldn't be protected, especially considering all of the open spots we have. I think they have until midnight to set it, so it could be that they're making decisions on which current guys to remove before they add any more.

Wow, they took Smit, Montanez, and Caridad off the 40 man as well. So they could have easily put those 3 on. Hell, maybe 2 or 3 of them ARE the compensation for Theo.

Even before any moves were made, there were 33 guys on the roster. as of now, there should be 6 open spots. And PLEASE don't tell me they plan on tendering Koyie Hill a contract. He really has no business on the roster.

They have to leave room for free agents as well. They can't fill the 40 man roster up to 40 or really anywhere close. But I am very surprised that they wouldn't protect Flaherty.

I agree. Angel Guzmans another guy who will probably be rostered sooner or later. But Flaherty can play pretty much all over the field and put up very good minor league numbers although struggled in the 2nd half, especially in AAA. Still, he an easy bet to be taken and kept on a roster unless he's traded first.

More surprised about Rhee and Flaherty than Antigua.

This could suggest that these "surprise" omissions - Flaherty, Rhee, Antigua - are guys being discussed as Theo compensation.

The Red Sox might like them, but not enough to want them rostered now.

If they don't get selected in the Rule 5 draft, one or more of them get sent to Boston.

If they do get selected, Epstein and Cherington turn to other names.

Same here, that just makes no sense at all. Rhee Is the best of all the players they left unprotected. Any thoughts to why they would leave Rhee unprotected Rasin?

That seems very possible to me.

If any of Flaherty, Rhee, or Antigua alone are the compensation for Theo, then we got absolutely hosed. Andy MacPhail came to the Cubs in the exact same scenario as Theo did and the return was a random A-ball pitcher.

Jay Jackson is another guy that could get taken in the Rule 5. He may even be the most likely to get taken. I guess there's a chance Burke could get taken as well, but a team would have to be really creative to keep him. My guess is the Cubs think he'll make it through and he'll be rostered next year if he continues to show this much progress.

that doesn't make any sense. So you risk losing someone so you can trade them? wtf Rhee is a legitimate starting pitching prospect who pitched very well last year. You risk losing him so you might be able to trade him? Very unlikely to make it through the rule 5 draft.

While not the highest upside of the unprotected guys, I think Flaherty is the most likely to be taken. His upside is as a utility infielder and he's basically major league ready right now.

Bottom line is 3 of our top 20 prospects just got left unprotected. I think it's pretty certain we're going to lose 2 guys this year. I know if the Cubs added a guy from the Rule 5 like any of those 3, I'd be pretty psyched.

I guess we'll see.

I find it hard to believe that a team would take Rhee - a guy who, more than anything, needs to pitch both to develop arm strength and improve his pitching skills - and stash him at the back of a major league bullpen and give him 30 or 40 innings. It's not like he's super young, either, and can afford to essentially waste a year of development.

Yeah, it's really confusing why any of those three weren't rostered, but I won't believe they're part of the compensation package until I actually see it as an official, done deal. I can't believe Theo would get ripped off like that.

The minor leagues are filled with guys with mediocre stuff and poor results. I'll be surprised if Jackson gets selected.

The Cubs were obviously more interested in the roster space than protecting those guys. We definitely protected the top four exposed prospects in my mind, but it seems we had space to protect a few more.

I'm sure Theo & Jed have a plan for those roster spots, but I'm very much wondering what those plans will be. It makes me wonder, though, if one or two Cubans could be given major league contracts this winter.
