CB Douglas just switched his commitment to Michigan. There were some pretty bad (for PSU) quotes from a couple other commits over the last couple of days. It's been less than a week. I'm not sure you can draw any conclusions about guys jumping ship or not yet.

I'm sure guys will transfer, and we'll find out sooner than later due to how soon the season starts

Reportedly Illinois has 6 coaches in the PSU parking lot waiting to recruit players, staking things out. Sporting News/ESPN guys think even the Zooker would have been above that.

Astute BSD comment of the day- Thanks to the @NCAA, older men are roaming the Penn State campus and apartments preying on younger men.

a couple of psu players have tweeted that they've seen opposing coaches outside their apartments, and penn state's coach (o'brien) said on mike & mike that players didn't want to leave the football building because coaches were hanging out in the parking lot outside. ncaa football is gross.

Good grief, can't campus security throw them off the premises for harassment or something? That's pretty disgraceful.

I was listening to someone (on Mully/Hanley) on the way to work this morning saying the NCAA shouldn't have even allowed coaches to contact players/recruits. He said it should've been up to the players/recruits to reach out to the schools they're interested in. They're not naive they've all been recruited, and if they're playing at Penn St. they were likely recruited by a lot of schools. They know how the game works and who to call if they want to leave.

I thought coaches had to inform Penn State if they were interested in recruiting any of the players and then it was up to the players to contact the coaches to start the process. Did I dream that up in my head?

You did. O'Brien said that some coaches have had the courtesy to call him about recruiting, but many have not

If it was, it's not being enforced. Everything I'm reading is that it's a frenzy of coaches contacting players.

yeah shockingly this vague and hastily thrown together arrangement is turning out to be a clusterf.

in related news, here's lsu football and its emphasis on academic achievement offering a scholarship to a kid who's going into 8th grade.

If he's going into 8th grade, he can clearly already handle the LSU curriculum.

the kid illinois is after isn't even that good. i gues some of the other coaches flew to arizona to work on his parents.

i disapprove of poaching players but the kid has voiced a desire to transfer and this is ultimately what will be best for him.

yeah i think that illinois flew 6 coaches into state college under the auspices of speaking to that one kid (who has apparently expressed interest in going there). obviously they don't need 6 coaches to convince a kid who already knows he wants off a sinking ship. they sent all those guys to try to poach a few other players while they're in town.

"poaching" feels like a weird term to use here. the methods are questionable, but these kids are being given an opportunity to play for a non-horribly disgraced disaster school. this is really good for them.

It is an opportunity for them, and it seems like if the kids see it that way, they're qualified as adults to make the decision to seek another school out without being bombarded by people who are stalking them. The coaching camp-out is extremely creepy regardless of circumstance.

I believe they have to notify the athletic department in some manner. O'Brien said only a few coaches (Ferentz, Marrone, O'Leary) have personally called to notify him that they were speaking with PSU players.

hahahah, yeah, that how college recruiting works, the coaches all just assume the recruits are qualified to make their own decisions and leave them alone.

No, he didn't.

Permission-to-contact rules are suspended. Penn State cannot restrict in any way a student-athlete from pursuing a possible transfer. Student-athletes must simply inform Penn State of their interest in discussing transfer options with other schools. Before communicating with student-athletes, interested schools also must inform Penn State of their intention to open discussions with the student-athlete.

So now you're saying this is no different from recruiting a high-schooler? Really?

ETA: I'm not saying don't reach out to the players at all, but stalking behavior that would get you arrested in some circumstances is not the way to go.
