you know what, if he can turn samardzija and cashner into durable, reliable starters, well, then, the cubs begin to find a way out from under their bad contracts, and the window to win opens sooner, stays open longer.

The Cubs bad contracts after this season being Alfonso Soriano.

or whatever other inevitable bad free agent contracts happen. and they will. also, garza, marshall, marmol (if kept), a first baseman, a third baseman, will all get more expensive. the zambrano/dempster money will be replaced.

That's fine. As the team gets better and they get further away from the sale and they start developing more internal talent and, hopefully, expanded revenue they'll have the money to take the hits when everything doesn't go their way FA-wise.

From the daily herald article:

Mike Maddux wouldn’t go into detail but said he discussed with his brother the possibility of coaching, should he get the job. Greg Maddux was an assistant to former Cubs GM Jim Hendry and is one of the most respected pitching minds in the game.

“We talked about it, yeah. Sure did,” Mike Maddux said.

I really like Maddux. I still think there may be a very good reason so few pitching coaches go on to manage teams. My worry is how he handles the rest of the game besides pitching. Not a knock on Mike Maddux at all. I will be very happy if he gets the job. Still leaning towards Davey Martinez, though. I hope he at least gets a shot here and we get to hear his thoughts on managing.

It is interesting that all of the articles point out that he may not even take the job if offered it. Hopefully his willingness to spend two days with the Cubs brass, indicates that his family is okay with a move.

I find it hard to get excited about a managerial hire, but at least I can't really find anything objectionable about Maddux. His sense of humor could also serve him well in deflecting the media.

When asked about stats Maddux had this to say:

"It's art, you can make some things out of them," he said. "But there's a lot of real stuff to them also. Good numbers don't lie. Bad numbers can be a little deceptive. You use all the information you can, but when it comes down to it, you gotta trust yourself, trust your players and try to put your players in positions where they can succeed."

in general, I prefer catchers as field managers, but I think maddux would be SO good with the pitchers, and that the Cubs have a hitting coach who has enough respect with the hitters, that it could definitely work out.

Apparently the Red Sox have not asked for permission to interview Dave Martinez either. For someone who supposedly is ready for a Major League manager job, why is he not interviewing anywhere?

Maybe it's just known in the inner circles within baseball that either the Rays simply will not grant permission (do they have to if it's for Martinez to be a head coach since it's a promotion?) or that Martinez simply doesn't want to be a head coach and is fine with where he is right now?

Mike Maddox just looks alot like Steven P. Keaton from family ties.

Are we assuming the dad's middle initial was P too just because Alex's was?

Or is that supposed to be some wacky one letter last name prefix?

Proving yet again that I will google anything, it was actually Steven R. Keaton.

I believe the Rays would be within their rights to deny permission for him to interview, but whether they would actually do that and block the career progression of one of their employees is another story. I find that highly unlikely. Maybe your 2nd comment is correct and he just doesn't want to be an MLB manager right now for whatever reason.

No I'm just dumb.

I believe a team has denied requests this off-season for employees that would be getting a promotion. I think it was the Orioles or Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays announced a new policy that said they would not allow employees to interview for lateral moves, in response to a bunch of media buzz that teams were interested in Farrell, their manager. It was specific to lateral moves, not promotions.

I can care less about this humor. Just worried about this hinges on his family? Seriously, if you want the job bad enough your family will be fine.
