If he hadn't turned all those doubles into singles by being lazy, he'd be type A.

I don't see the infamous Jeff Keppinger Type A Free Agent anywhere on that list

That's because he's not a free agent util 2013 and this list is only 2012 FAs. However, Elias has the rankings of every player in baseball and what their rank would be, and that's the one which lists Keppinger and Polanco as Type A's.

Pena is a really borderline case. You can't offer him arbitration unless you really are willing to take him back at 1 year/$10 million or so again.

The good thing is that as a type B, he won't have his FA value dragged down by the compensation, so that makes it a little easier for him to get a deal from another team.

assuming some other team(s) would be interested in pena at 8.5-10M, why not offer and if he accepts, trade him to another team? I'm not certain, but I believe that such a trade is allowed, and isn't subject to the same "can't be traded until June" clause that affects free agents, b/c technically pena would not be a free agent in that scenario. i do see the risk if you think no one else would bite and feel that his contract would prevent more meaningful signings, but i think it _may_ be worth it, if you think he could be moved even if he did accept. upside would be a top flight 1b (assuming pujols or fielder) plus a sandwich pick or a prospect or two.

I think he would still technically have been a free agent. Arbitration occurs after players file for free agency.

I see zero reason to do this. If Pena accepts, now a potential obstacle stands in the way of prospective 1b free agents looking to sign in Chicago. To me, the better gamble would be to let him walk and hope some team throws a contract at him before the arbitration deadline. I don't think he signs by then, but one can still hope.

I didn't want to start a new thread, but MLBTR has someone who has articulated a process for estimating arbitration salaries and put out a spreadsheet with the estimates for each MLB arbitration eligible.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/projected-arbitration-salaries.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

Cubs estimates:

Garza - 8.7 million

Soto - 4.0

Wells - 2.2

Baker - 1.4

DeWitt - 1.2

Hill - 0.9

I was really hoping someone would take the time to do that. It's not difficult, but it is time consuming, to find the comps for each player.

Getting all of our arbitration eligibles for under $18.4 million would be a few million better than I've been projecting. I'd be very happy with that.

I know a way to save $900,000.

I'll be the backup C. I won't hit a lick, so I'll gain a reputation as an excellent defensive catcher that works well with pitchers.

You'd still get paid the minimum so they'd only save about $400,000 (still worth it)
