The worst case in running backwards is they tackle you in the end zone with a second or 2 left and you wind up with a free kick following the safety, putting you in the exact same situation as the punt.

Unless you fumble it in the end zone. Or they catch you before getting to the end zone. I like the concept and have thought about that before, but I'd have to see it in action a couple of times before I can tell you if its a good idea or bad.

This is really a waste of everyone's time, but how slow do you all think the Bears players are that the Eagles could chase them down even with a 5 yard headstart?

Why is a RB/WR more likely to fumble the ball in the end zone than Podlesh fumbling the snap?

Is Stuart Scott terminally ill?

He has cancer so maybe.

Welp, didn't know this.

yeah, that's actually pretty amazing that he's continuing to work. he looks sick as hell.

He's a pretty tough dude:

While the world fixated on the melodrama of LeBron James and Co. during the NBA Finals, Scott soldiered on through his anchoring duties for ABC while simultaneously undergoing chemotherapy.

During the week of the ESPYs, Scott underwent chemo Monday morning, attended an event that night, participated in the ESPYs golf tournament Tuesday, served as the emcee for a brunch, trained in mixed martial arts Wednesday morning and attended the awards that evening.

Like I said, I would need to see how it plays out before being certain it's a good idea. I feel much more comfortable with Podlesh taking 5-10 steps back and punting out of bounds. It's been done before and has worked really well in these situations. If he is able to kill 4-5 seconds and then get 4 seconds of hang time as it travels out of bounds, its game over. I can't remember where the Bears were in field position but I'm not even sure that running to the end zone and waiting to kneel for a safety takes 9 seconds, so if you are wrong you are basically in the exact same situation except that they get to set up their return. Returning a punt after a safety is a little different than returning a punt in a normal situation.

Edit: Average player probably runs a 40 yard dash in 5 seconds. Add 2-3 seconds due to being in pads/being blocked (unless you can get through unblocked) and you are really risking that the play really does nothing for you.

i think it's pretty awesome that we can win a game on the road against the eagles when our running back fumbles twice and they capitalize on it both times. seems like we dominated the game and would have run away with it.

add to it that the Iggles came into this game hot. and our offense did as much to win the game as our defense or special teams.

I think there is a reason that has never happened in an NFL game.

An intentional safety at the end of a game?

its ok, we all thought it

I'm only wildly speculating based on my medical knowledge and what's been released via the news. But if he was diagnosed during an "emergency appendectomy" 3 years ago and has been recently undergoing chemotherapy, it doesn't sound good. Most likely, this is an intestinal tumor, and in all likelihood it has spread. However, again, I no nothing more than what's been stated in the news and I could be completely wrong.

Props to him for his attitude and continuing to work through all this.

has there? I'm not aware. I think what Lovie did was right, punt the [expletive] away and make them go 60+ yards minimum with 3 seconds. thats 1 [expletive] play, and a play that has a very low probability of success.

Meh, I don't know about that. Coaches in general are scared of doing anything that's not common football logic, for fear that it blows up in their faces and makes them look terrible. That's why coaches punt on most 4th downs when there are studies that show its smarter to go for it from 3 yards or less almost every time, it's why no one ever experimented with snapping the ball to your running back until one guy succeeded with it and now everyone does it. It could potentially be a very smart decision that's just waiting for the first coach with the balls to try it.

BTW, not the exact same situation, but coaches have intentionally taken safeties in end of game situations, and sometimes even intentionally stalled before going down to kill time. But the only situation I've ever seen it happen is when a team is backed up to their own end zone, and the strategy is used to punt from a much better position.
