Watch Quade trick Theo by saying all the right things, the way he did to us in that interview with Kap last winter.

he'll play some led zeppelin and we'll think he's cool. but he's really a narc in disguise.

I thought Dusty quoting rappers was way cooler than that.

Get that cheese.

i wish we could get francona but i could understand if epstein wants to go with someone new (to him).

i don't really care who it is, as long as it's not somebody completely awful. no point in really keeping quade around either. eff that guy.

Just wondering, I might be just blanking, but who does NSBB regard as the best manager in the league?

Joe Maddon, if I had to pick one.

Honestly I mean sure, but I really just think managers only have to not be complete morons. As long as you aren't a Dusty or TLR batting pitchers 8th and bunting every inning then I can tolerate you. Why are most people (media) so afraid to admit how unimportant managers are? Or am I undervaluing them at this point?

I think it's funny that now that we have a competent front office lots of people would now be cool with Sandberg.

You can back a long ways on this board and find people saying how overstated the impact of field managers is. Unfortunately, many here are a bit sensitive since we had one of the apocalyptically bad ones for four years here.

Also, if you have a really, really good roster, there is less the manager can screw up.

Few people want to see a guy like Sandberg as manager, but if you have a really good GM (or 2-3 like we are going to have), it mitigates the damage.

1) Don't abuse young arms.

2) Good players toward the top of the batting order.

3) Keep all the players reasonably happy and motivated.

4) Good pitchers for important late-game situations, bad pitchers for blowouts.

That's all I really want or need out of a manager.

I could be wrong, but I think there was some SABR credence to the batting of the pitcher 8th thing. And I don't remember Dusty doing much of it.

EDIT - Yea...

The biggest news out of the Brewers camp recently was Ned Yost's revelation that catcher Jason Kendall may bat ninth, with the pitcher taking the eighth slot. On Friday, Yost said:

We've done studies on this. It's not just that we come up one day and say, 'You know, Jason Kendall's gonna hit ninth.' You've had a lot of smart people looking at it and crunching numbers and seeing if, numbers-wise, it made sense.

Those familiar with this discussion will no doubt know that the authors of The Book found that by batting the pitcher eighth, teams could realize an increase of around two runs, and by totally optimizing their lineups a maximum of 15 runs--equivalent to a win and a half--over the course of a season. At first that former result may seem counterintuitive. However, the reason for the small improvement is that although inferior-hitting pitchers will be given more plate appearances in the eighth slot, this will be offset by the fact that a regular hitter in the ninth hole will result in more RBI opportunities for the top of the lineup, especially the third-place hitter.

Basically maintain order, make the obvious choices, and let the players sort the rest out on the field.

He didn't, it was just poor English on my part.

Honestly, I really don't care because I have almost total faith that the new FO will put someone in there who they can work with and isn't a monster from a dank bog like Dusty. Most managers aren't THAT bad, so hell, I wouldn't even care if they wanted Sandberg. The Boy Wonder Boner Trifecta runs the show.

I've heard some pretty good things about Dave Martinez, but I have no idea how he'd actually be.

A year of Quade, to give Francona (I'm on board with never, ever calling him Tito) some time off, then Francona when the salaries fully come off the books (aside from Soriano). Or just fire Quade and hire Francona.

Posted
Not Quade. I could live with Ryno but I'd rather bring in someone else. I assume Francona is going to take some time off now.

if we hired francona it would be too much boston. theo is all the boston we need.

The Ricketts brought in this leadership heirarchy to completely and fully emulate the Red Sox. And truthfully, the more Boston the better (minus the petty, vindictative megalomaniac ownership). The similarities between the two franchises are aplenty, except the Cubs have no other big market competitor to contend with. It is the choice model to copy, and that's why they hired the men they did.

Posted
And I'll go for the drunken trifecta reply: It is absolutely amazing Ricketts pulled this off. Friedman would have been great, but this coup could not have played out better. The brightest era of Cubs baseball has dawned.

Let Sandberg be manager. He can just have an AIM chat window open with Theo the whole game in case he starts to do something stupid.

shock collar

just hire j. walter weatherman to scare him when he does something stupid. "and THAT'S why you don't sac bunt with your #2 hitter in the first inning!"
