They could put part of the leftover money towards making Soriano go away.

That'd leave us with essentially a blank slate for 2013 with no bad contracts on the books.

Or we could just keep Soriano and play him more smartly as he can still be a productive player if used in the right spots and we'd still have like $30-50m left to play with, with his contract on the books.

What are these "spots" you speak of? If you mean him picking up his checks after he is DFA, then sure. Play him smartly.

Like playing him more exclusively vs. LHP, his line against LHP last year was .271/.312/.500 (.812 OPS). Plus he had 54 XBH last year (26 HR, 27 2B, and 1 3B), Soriano still can hit for power he just shouldn't be playing everyday. So the "spots" where he actually will provide value to the team is if you play him more exclusively against LHP, keep him out there when he goes on one of his crazy hot streaks, then don't be afraid to sit him for some time when he goes on on of his cold streaks. Soriano still has value, not the amount that we are paying him for but there is value there, it's crazy that people don't see it.

If you are going to use a roster-spot on a lefty-masher who plays mediocre defense in the corners, you should be able to do a lot better than an .812 OPS.

Exactly. His performance against lefties wasn't even that impressive. Carlos Lee, John Mayberry, Vernon Wells, Jason Bourgeouis and Jason Bay are just a few of the LFers that were better against lefties last year. People try to extract value out of Soriano, but there really isn't much, and he's only going to get worse. He still has some power, but that's about it. If someone will take him without the Cubs paying the entire contract, you do it immediately.

Agreed. Soriano is not a platoon partner in waiting. The other problem with him is his known streakiness. There is just no way to play a guy when he's hot and sit him when he is cold. The thing with Soriano was that you had to play him everyday and wait for the streaks to happen. He's no longer worth the suffering cold streaks while waiting for the diminished production spurts.

I still don't understand why people talk like they "need" to address what to do with Soriano ASAP. It's nigh impossible to trade him, so what's the rush? He's not keeping them from signing someone else or trading for someone else. Just kick him to the curb when you need the room.

in fairness it's going to be really hard to get the payroll under 20 million until we trade him to a big market like kc

My only concern is that he'll continue to get worse, to the point where teams won't even want to waste a guaranteed roster spot on him. If you can trade him now with a few million in salary relief for the next three years, I say do it. I highly doubt his value is going to rise much.

But if your only upside to trading now is a few million bucks, then it makes more sense to keep him since he could have a good year, making it possible to unload even more money, if needed, or possibly get a prospect. As a big market team with room in the payroll you can afford to gamble a few million dollars on the chance you'll get more in the future.

Yeah, no kidding. His value is pretty much rock bottom right now, so the Cubs would probably save, what, $5-6 million from the rest of his contract if they're just looking to unload him? I know that's not nothing, but come on; if they're still scraping for (relative) dollars then it's just ridiculous.

Actually, he was busy 9 months ago. You see, ct, when a mommy and daddy love each other very much they hope and wish really hard and 9 months later the stork delivers them a beautiful baby.

The concern is that he has an even worse year, and you're forced to eat his entire contract. I guess it just depends on how much the Cubs value the possible millions saved over the next few years

Yes, that's the concern. But in the grand scheme the entire contract isn't much more than the vast majority of his contract. There's very little to be gained by forcing him out today, and it's worth trying to see if he can rebound a little and get a contender to bite on more.
