Okay, I decided to listen to the Gammons thing. I disagree with him, but to be clear, on the whole 25th best prospect thing in the Red Sox system, he's only speaking in reference to Trey McNutt. I completely think that's ludicrous (the Red Sox system isn't all that good right now at the top ... ), but if he had been suggesting Brett Jackson was 25th ... that would've been more ridiculous.

[expletive], I was giving him the benefit of the doubt that he meant the Cubs 5th best available prospect(i.e. not Baez) = 25 in the Red Sox system McNutt? Hilarious.

What do the Red Sox even have left on the farm? Didn't they trade their top guys for A Gon?

Gammons is just repeating what he hears from his sources. None of what he says is his own assumptions/beliefs.

His source is Larry Lucchino or one of his lapdogs. What Gammons reports is the insanity Ricketts has to deal with.

Peter Gammons is on WEEI right now. He said that everyone knows that the Cubs have a bottom 3 farm system and the fear of giving up the next Billy Williams is 'absurd.' A top 5 Cubs prospect would slot in at about 25 in the Boston system. He also said that the tedious process is because the people negotiating for the Cubs have no idea who any of their prospects are or what they're worth.

That's the kind of hard-hitting analysis Boston is hearing.

Are you sure that's what he said? Any chance you are exaggerating a bit, because that is idiotic and not something I would assume Gammons would say.

It's about the Red Sox. Gammons fanboyism knows no bounds when it comes to them and his pal Larry.

This and the fact that Gammons was always a clown and then got a respite for having a stroke or something.

I remember Gammons as one of the first journalists I LOLed at consistently 10-15 years ago.

Gammons was always way off when it came to talking about imminent trades that never materialized, but he was always up on things like prospects and their worth long before anybody else in mainstream baseball media acknowledged that prospects had value. He's clearly a Red Sox homer in that he would focus on them and probably sympathize with their side of a situation, but him making such asinine statements as this indicates his brain suffered some sort of damage, or he just pores on the idiotic homer schtick more when talking to local Boston radio.

Like when he sad the Cubs were getting Mike Lowell all 2003 only for us to get Aramis.

I believe he swore up and down we weren't getting Nomar without giving up Clement in '04.

There's some pieces. I like Will Middlebrooks, don't love him. He's largely thought to be one of the top 3 guys in the Red Sox system, but I wouldn't rank him above Brett Jackson, and I'm not sure I'd rank him ahead of Szczur or McNutt to be honest. I don't know if Ryan Lavarnaway is still prospect eligible, but if he is, he would be in my top 3. He's a guy that would probably rank around Brett Jackson for many. If you love the bat, then he could be even higher. Then, there are arms like Ranaudo and Barnes, both of them very similar to McNutt in terms of stuff. Ranaudo's a better prospect than McNutt. I wouldn't rank Barnes ahead, but some might. Xander Bogaerts is well-thought of. He's ... uh ... what's a good Cubs comp ... he's perhaps a more polished Gioskar Amaya and would probably be a solid top 10 prospect in the Cubs system. I'll have to think some more about other guys. I don't love Bryce Brentz that much yet. Sean Coyle and Garin Cecchini are good, young positional guys.

It's somewhat like ... well, our system. Somewhat thin at the top in terms of impact guys, but with some high ceiling pieces lower on. I'd probably rate it ahead of the Cubs system as of now, but not by much.

He was on ESPNNEWS reporting that nothing had gone down with Nomar just as the bottom line was announcing a Cubs/Red Sox trade.

you seriously want Epstein to secretly advise the Cubs while a member of the Red Sox FO for a year? That's insane.

People have stated that if the deal didn't happen, Epstein would be sitting out the year (not in the Red Sox FO) while getting paid. As for all of the jokes about my 3-way trades, I'll repeat what I said earlier in this thread - some of you would have traded 3 or 4 of our top prospects to get Epstein. Luckily Ricketts has more sense than some of you.

Here's the only thing I can find close to that, but of course, he could've whined about it on tv...

Epstein figured if Nomar had only 60 games left in a Boston uniform and he would play only half of them, he had to try to move him. The Cubs would have traded Matt Clement and Orlando Cabrera (who they would have first gotten from the Expos) for Garciaparra and Derek Lowe, but given the opportunity to get a great defensive first baseman, Epstein went for Doug Mientkiewicz and Cabrera and figures that Lowe will be a better pitcher with a vastly different defense.

TRADE HIM. I WANT TO LEAD THE LEAGUE IN SWAG NOT WHITENESS

DID YOU SEE HIS BEARD?

Posted

Levine was on a little while ago.

Basically didn't say much of note. Said that Theo has been working the backchannels this whole time, not sitting on his hands. Setting things up so that when this is all done he's got his ducks in a row and his staff hired. Nothing really new.

Matt Kemp can be moved to right.

Is there a single black catcher in baseball? I really can't think of any. To be honest, Roy Campanella is the last one I can think of.

I wonder if the RS had to give him permission to do that? Seems like he probably shouldn't be working on Cubs stuff while under contract to the RS.

And even Roy was half -- dad was italian, mom was black.

I'm guessing something like that would be implied in the granted permission (+ the supposed 14 day window that comes with it).
