If he's outsourcing all the day to day baseball duties to the GM it sure gets a lot closer to it. Guys like Epstein get to these positions because they're super smart and work 18 hour days, if he goes to 12 hour days because someone like Hoyer is taking on all the traditional duties of a GM it'll feel like a part time job in comparison.

Does that not sound like something Epstein would desire given what we know about him and his past?

Yeah, definitely. I'm sure Hoyer has worked just as hard but he hasn't banked the good will like Theo has. The glory will go to Theo just as much whether his title is President of Baseball ops or GM at this point.

That's not true. They can ask for permission to make an announcement during the World Series, and they have before.

What it all comes down to is that Theo Epstein is getting his old genius buddies all together and to make some [expletive] history running the Cubs and that's [expletive] awesome.

Peter Abraham / Boston Globe[/url]"]

The anticlimactic announcement that Theo Epstein has been named savior of the Cubs is not expected to be made today.

Yet according to national baseball gurus Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal, Epstein is busy putting together a front office that could include Jed Hoyer of the Padres as his GM. Padres assistant GM Jason McLeod could be in the mix, too.

Hoyer and McLeod are former Epstein lieutenants in Boston. As to what Red Sox staffers might join Epstein, that seems to be part of the compensation negotiations. There are a few Epstein loyalists who surely would want to stick with him.

If Hoyer leaves the Padres, Josh Byrnes is the logical choice to become the GM. He has been with the Padres since being fired by the Diamondbacks.

Meanwhile, on Yawkey Way, Ben Cherington is running the baseball operations department and is basically the GM. Earlier today, Cherington spoke to the Globe on behalf of the team to answer some questions for a story that will be in the paper tomorrow.

So while it appears awkward that Epstein is still officially GM of the Red Sox, he is running the Cubs and Cherington is running the Sox. You'd like to think that somebody (Bud Selig?) would get it settled eventually.

That's just really strange considering the deal hasn't gone through yet.

How many pages would this thread be if it was just the posts with people making comments about how many more pages/posts have been made without any new news or announcement?

Seriously.

And the posts criticizing those posts. Like this one. Because those posts are stupid.

Rickets needs to hire the San Diego guy he and Theo wants for GM. Work out compensation with the Padres to set a comparison. Then he goes back and tells LL I will give you a similar deal and throw some extra cash your way. If an arbitrator or Selig gets involved a similar comp will already be established.

The Red Sox have seemingly had a committee/brain trust approach to running the team operations from day 1 up onto the present. When Theo stepped out in 2006 they didn't juts replace him with one guy. No surprise that's what Theo would want to emulate here as well, and no surprise that's what Ricketts would want to bring over with him if he idolizes the Red Sox model so much.

I also remember watching an interview with Cherrington in which he stated that the Red Sox front office all take turns going with the team on road trips to have someone in the front office with the team at all times to take the temperture of the team and be a sounding board for the manager in any concerns he has. Sounds like their front office wanted a very hands on approach to working with the team, not just up sitting in their offices. Theo and Hoyer are now in their late 30's and married. Maybe they're splitting job duties because they don't want to spend so much time away from their families.

Sounds great, frankly. This is a situation where I don't want one guy with a big brain running the show. I want a bunch of really smart people all working together toward the same goal and figuring out how to build the model franchise.

oh man, this would be amazing. ricketts is supposed to be buddies with the owner in san diego, so this could work. have hoyer make a lateral move from sd gm to chc gm and give the padres five hundred bucks, then call up the red sox and tell them that we know what the precedent for compensation in lateral moves is now.

This was probably already posted but I didn't notice and thought this was interesting.

Moorad and Ricketts have become friends since the Ricketts family bought the Cubs in October 2009. Ricketts was in San Diego on Sept. 28, which was the last day of the regular season, and did not return with the Cubs on the flight back to Chicago. Ricketts met with Moorad and sat with him, Byrnes and Hoyer during the season finale.

The Ricketts family has a strong relationship with Byrnes' brother through their bond business, and it's been confirmed that Ricketts had some informal conversations with Byrnes as far back as spring training. Byrnes was Moorad's GM in Arizona, where he received an eight-year contract in 2007. He was fired in 2009.

Same here. The celebrity name is fine, but I generally find the brain trust and entire collection of intellectual talent makes the difference.

I'm hearing that the reason Moorad would let Hoyer walk in the first place is because he loves Byrnes. I think we get one but not both and probably Hoyer.

Well, we've got 10 pages of cubclapp agreeing with other people, so that's probably the floor.

It's like Ricketts is this badass bully and he is picking on all the teams for their best assets and if they say no he'll beat them up.

I don't think Theo can productively fill his day only plotting strategy about how to negotiate with the Pujolses of the world and figuring out how to trade for the aces that come along every so often.

Yes. Taking the most backward organization in the majors and turning it into the most advanced is a part-time job.

In any case, I don't think it's just a titular distinction. Epstein will be in the trenches doing the nitty gritty to some degree I imagine.

He's getting twice the salary to work half as much. If you think he won't accept that gig, we shouldn't hire him bc he's stupid.
