The relationship between Epstein and Luccino/Henry is irreparably damaged.

That's just not at all accurate. Lucchino is his mentor and the one who actually brought him to Boston in the first place. John Henry gave him his first GM job for his hometown team. Not only that, but he's been given complete control over Boston's baseball operations.

Also, I still fail to see how the Cubs going with an interim general manager makes any sense. Here's this from SOSH:

People have talked about how silly the Red Sox situation would be if they had to have Theo stick around another year.

But how ridiculous would the Cubs' situation be?

Sorry, Mr. Fielder. We can't make any big commitment this year. Our GM is just a place holder till next year.

Sorry, Mr. Pujols. We can't make any big decisions this year.

June 2012 amateur draft? Has to go on auto pilot.

Amateur signings in the Caribbean and elsewwhere around the world? Um, whatever we were doing last year.

Hey, Cubs fans, turn out for our 2012 season while we mark time till we get serious! And don't forget to tune in to WGN to watch your Cubs in purgatory broadcast!

Teams often have rebuilding seasons and seasons that you strongly suspect aren't going anywhere but the Cubs would be taking that to a whole new level with a season where there's effectively no one at the tiller.

The White Sox got 2 of the Marlins' top 10 prospects for letting Ozzie Guillen go to Florida. Why would the Red Sox accept anything less?

That's what awaits if the Cubs don't play ball. It's like the part in Moneyball where Beane is trying to convince Omar Minaya to add Youkilis into the Cliff Floyd trade. He tells him something to the effect of: "I can see the Boston papers now: 'Larry Lucchino misses out on Cliff Floyd to keep fat third baseman in Double A'"

The Cubs knew that Theo would come at a price, that he'd require a fair amount of compensation and now they're getting sticker shock. You can't just have one of the elite general managers in all of baseball when he's under contract. A price has to be paid. Holding out hope that the Red Sox will "blink first" is amateurish. Missing out on getting him would be a disaster.

This is a totally unrealistic outcome. If the Red Sox are so unreasonable that a deal can't get done, Ricketts will simply move on to the next candidate. Epstein is the top choice, but he's not the only choice, and there's no way Ricketts wastes a year hoping for Epstein to come. If this deal doesn't get done, it's undeniable that both teams will take a negative PR hit; nobody wins. The Cubs will be viewed by some as cheap and blowing a huge opportunity in typical Cubs fashion. The Red Sox will come across as petty and unreasonable, and will now be viewed as a divided organization with a man in charge of baseball operations that doesn't really want to be there. Coupled with your late season collapse and the with the way your owners threw Terry Francona under the bus in such despicable fashion, it would really cap a horrendous offseason.

All I got from "Rough" Carrigan on a google search was a former major league catcher that died in 1969. But, I do value his opinion.....

Bingo.

Yea, it's a really weak argument given the fact Theo's already agreed to go to the Cubs. The posturing just makes the Sox look like a jilted ex-girl friend.

After the last couple weeks in Boston, I think the Cubs would at least be speaking the Red Sox's language.

If that's how people in Boston reason things through, then maybe we shouldn't have expected any different behavior from Luccino/Henry.

"Whatever they were doing last year"? The Cubs had one of the more aggressive drafts/international signings of any team in the league. So yea, I guess that'd be perfectly fine, actually.

Yeah, Javier Baez would be a great trade target for the Red Sox... if he were eligible to be traded yet. Derp.

PTBNL! Woot!

Can't even do that yet. I believe there's a six month window on naming PTBNL's.

Really? Somehow I wasn't aware of that, but would make sense.

A PTBNL has to be named within 6 months.

Ricketts needs to think this through. If Theo falls through, the Cubs will devolve into a Lord of the Flies scenario. There will be nobody left in charge and Zambrano will come back and take over. He will have his way with all of the Cubs wives and feral dogs will take over the club house.

So yeah...Boston has a bit of leverage here.

One of my friends is a Sox fan and he thinks Theo would just go back to business as usual with little backlash should this fall through. He claims we have everything to lose because we've already claimed Theo is our savior and we can't afford to lose out on him. He reads SoSH fairly regularly so that's no surprise he shares their opinions.

I just find it interesting how each fanbase views the other team's stance right now.

It's less what the fans will think and more how it will actually affect the franchises. It hurts the Sox more.

They are delusional if they think Theo goes back to work as if nothing happened. If the reports from Henry are correct, Theo already told them he's done after next year anyway.

However, I think some here and elsewhere are a bit off too. Theo is worth more than any single player, especially a minor league player in the Cubs system. Their isn't a difference maker in the tradable players.

So, I don't think there is much leverage on either side. I think the Red Sox are attempting to squeeze the Cubs so as to look good to the fan base and media.

Theo's time in Boston is over regardless what happens.

Ricketts should make a final offer and give the Red Sox a deadline. They don't accept the offer or meet the deadline, move on to Hahn or Byrnes and use the money and prospects saved to start building for 2012. Next offseason, go after Epstein as president of baseball operations with Hahn/Byrnes as GM. It's not like Epstein is(was) going to make the Cubs World Series winners in 2012 anyhow.

Problem is, there are other very good candidates that don't require top prospects.

This isn't true. He said that he'd love to have Theo as the GM for 20 years.

Here is the actual quote:

I would have loved for Theo to have been our general manager for the next 20 years. That was my hope. That would have been my hope. But you don't always get what you want. I did everything I could personally, and so did (chairman) Tom (Werner) and (CEO) Larry (Lucchino), to make that happen. The fact is that being general manager in Boston, being manager in Boston, is a terrifically tough job.
