Kinda surprised to have not heard any more news this evening.

There was some, sort of. Apparently the Cubs have received a list of players that the Red Sox are willing to accept and the "baseball men" (Bush/Wilken/Fleita IIRC) are looking at it to pick which they're ok with giving up.

anything new since i went to bed around 10 am or is this still one big circle jerk?

Aside from the post above yours, still mostly the circle jerk. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It's called negotiation. You don't just walk in and offer Boston what they want.

Start out offering just cash. Very smart.

I forgot to add that the reporter from Boston on CTL earlier claimed the compensation talks went extremely poor.

I'm guessing Boston is posturing, they have no leverage.

That's one reporter's editorial, so I don't think you were wrong for excluding it. It means nothing.

This is just a normal negotiation process, made to look more dramatic because Boston writers like to do that. Cubs shouldn't be automatically caving to whatever Boston wants, they need to try not to give up to much. It'll all pan out and if it doesn't we can get someone to be GM for a year and then rape their front office dry next year.

Wow - a Boston reporter said things didn't go well? The same reporter pool that was dreaming about Castro and Garza or both initially? Then reality set in so they focused on Brett Jackson, this time for sure. Now a new reality is starting to set in.

Yeah, it's not going well. For Boston.

Vinestal's right: if they want to test Ricketts, we'll just go a year with an interim and completely and totally rape them next year.

They've got zero leverage. Judging by the fact that we walked in and offered cash, I'd say we are fully aware of that.

I think it went very well today. We didn't give up the farm. We're standing firm. We're acting like an actual entity that needs to be reckoned with, for a change.

All I know is things can get ugly for both teams if it doesn't happen. Ricketts has to face the media and fans not to mention find a plan B. Red Sox have to figure out what do do now that they've denied Epstein the Cubs contract and all but given their GM job to Cherington.

Also, Ricketts is a ridiculously successful businessman who by now probably knows his baseball. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the dude knows his way around a negotiation. It'll be fine.

It would be way worse for the Red Sox. All Ricketts has to do is say "look, they wanted the moon and I wouldn't give it to them" and then go and hire another perfectly fine candidate.

The Red Sox are stuck with a presumably lame duck GM who hates them, a frustrated future GM who just got Conan O'Brien'd and a PR disaster the likes of which we haven't seen in quite some time.

Seriously. Plan B? Plan B is it becomes a complete unmitigated disaster for Boston.

I don't think this would hurt Ricketts a whole lot. He's the primary reason why these negotiations have made it this far. Everything is in place for Theo to come to the Cubs. If the Red Sox decide to submarine everything by demanding Castro or Garza, Ricketts will come off really well for turning them down.

Plus, considering the compensation and amount of autonomy Ricketts offered Epstein, I have to imagine this would make the Cubs an incredibly attractive location for GM candidates. Ricketts is serious about building a contender and doing what it takes to win. He clearly would put his utmost faith and support behind Epstein. Imagine being a Rick Hahn or a John Copolella if this deal fell through?

The Red Sox, on the other hand, are in a rough spot. If they kill this deal, their front office would be in complete and total disarray. Ben Cherrington had the GM spot in his grasp, only for it to be taken away because the owners were too stubborn? Why would he want to stay? Theo Epstein would sure as hell be disgruntled after that mess. What manager would want to replace Francona if they know the front office could change drastically in the next year?

This should be fine, unless the Red Sox decide to do something incredibly stupid.

If they want to go all in and demand everyone shows their hand, they're going to be mighty disappointed at the results.

I think this is nothing but day 1 posturing.....and we're going to see Epstein at a microphone with Cubs logos behind him very soon. Whether that's Friday, or next week matters little. If the Boston brass want to haggle a little, that's fine too.

Larry Lucchino is probably calling the shots over there.

Larry Lucchino is a lunatic imbecile.

Again, I highly doubt they give a crap about pissing off Theo and Cherington. This is the front office that accused their manager of having a drug problem.
