I don't know if it's been mentioned, but after more info has come out today you begin to realize that Ricketts has/had huge leverage in this situation (whether he realized it or not). Apparently Theo told Henry he wouldn't be GM beyond next year. That being the case, the Sox were left in the position of letting their lame duck GM leave or risk Ricketts taking his heir apparent in Cherington, leaving them with neither after 2012.

That being the case, letting Theo go was/is the prudent thing to do.

At least Sullivan doesn't dismiss the possibility of signing Prince.

The Cubs would not comment on the deal, which was first reported Wednesday morning on Boston-area radio station WEEI-AM. The Cubs and Red Sox still are sorting out compensation — minor league players or cash — and whether Epstein can bring anyone from Boston to work for him in Chicago.

His title has yet to be announced, but Cubs' czar would seem to be an apt description because Epstein is being given unprecedented authority to change the culture of the franchise.

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts essentially finished off his two-month search for Jim Hendry's replacement over the weekend, bringing Epstein to Chicago to let him know he was going to be the face of the franchise, putting him on the same level as team President Crane Kenney. Epstein will report directly to Ricketts and is to be responsible for all baseball decisions.

The hiring of Epstein signals a distinct change in philosophy for the Cubs, who had been branded as an old school team under former general manager Jim Hendry, a scout at heart. Hendry had a difficult time hiding his disdain for the computer-toting analysts pervading front offices throughout the game, the kind that Ricketts was seeking.

Kaplan vs. Theo, the interview.

Hah, that's going to be hilarious.

Remember when we thought Quade vs. Kaplan was awesome?

It's funny because Kaplan thinks Theo's awesome, but he clearly has no idea why he does.

When he realizes what Theo is really about, his head will explode.

Theo: "How do you live with a player who has only 20 HR and 70RBI when he was signed to be a 30/100 guy? It has to be disappointing, right?"

This really helps me respect Ricketts as a shrewd businessman. I would have expected in the past that opportunities like this would simply be ignored.

It seems Ricketts understood the situation and how he could use it his advantage, and then actually did so.

My faith in Tom is now growing.

It's weird that you seem to understand stuff like this and still think Sandberg would be a good manager. I was going to go further but I don't want to start an off topic argument.

Again, as important as the progressive nature of Theo's philosophy is Ricketts' recognition of the importance of consistency and continuity. I openly bristled at the "I don't need baseball men overseeing my baseball men" comment, but now I'm looking at it in a completely different light. Giving Theo full authority over baseball operations is going to have a lot more import than simply bringing in a sharp mind.

I don't know when the last time I was this excited about the Cubs. Certainly not over any point of the last three years.

Yeah, I consider it to be a long shot that Sandberg would actually be Theo's first manager. At this early date, comments or off-hand remarks are more likely just wanting to be nice and keep options open.

I fully expect him to choose someone in keeping with his philosophy, and frankly Ryno -- while I love the guy -- doesn't fit the MO.

This is the Earth shifting under our feet. Not grasping at figures from our past.

Because I do not feel Ryno's comments should be taken as 100% truth in how he would run things (bunting, etc). I think when he says "play the game the right way" only means he expects guys to hustle and act like pros.

It makes total sense now. Ricketts is going with the guy who showed he could come in an overhaul an old-school operation in a high-profile city.

What I didn't recognize until very recently was that Theo, at a certain point, really couldn't back out. The factors were in place to push him to the next step in his career. I *think* Ricketts knew this earlier on. I'm not sure of it, of course, but the results are certainly fantastic and I'm inclined to think that something like this is no accident.

We should collect all these links and have a Theo porn sticky.

a co-workers comment to my status update "we got Theo! Go Cubs!"

Nice, now he can run another club into the ground...wait...I guess the bigger question would be where do you run a club into when they are already in the ground??? Things that make you say hmmmmmm

ETA: I should add he's a Braves fan...

This interview is [expletive] amazing.

Not to put water on the fire, but anyone who doesn't know JD Drew was a really good player is kind of a baseball idiot.

It's not about JD Drew, it's about what he's saying. The philosophical things.

And, as an aside, plenty of fans and "experts" criticized the hell out of JD Drew.

That he was defending Drew isn't the point. It was the basis of his defense. Can you recall a Cubs GM or coach who would have assessed players that way? No, I thought not.

Yep, he was thoroughly bashed in Boston. I loved the part about two different types of players and reaction to hot and cold streaks. J.D. is classic STONE FACE.

It's not "comments". That's how he's managed in the minors
