Mike & Mike are announcing that Theo has agreed to terms with the Cubs, but they're still ironing out his official title and compensation. Not sure this is anything new, outside of the "agreed" part

Yeah, this was said last page. Check before you post.

I've said from the beginning that it's only going to be monetary compensation. I'm sticking with that.

Probably money straight from the player budget giving Theo a 70M payroll!!

Cashner and/or Jackson for Epstein???? #-o And some of you guys make fun of my trade proposals. :-k

I wouldn't trade either but either of those for Epstein is far less absurd than that Upton/Davis package of yours.

It's a tossup, IMO.

We aren't trying to get Epstein out of some 15 year contract to come to the Cubs. The only reason he's interested is because he's at least a little disgruntled in Boston, and he's only under contract for another 12 months. For the Red Sox to demand any player of value(aka anyone who would play in MLB or find themselves on a Top 15-20 prospect list), is a desperate attempt that someone like Ricketts should see right through. He can respond "you can take whatever trinket I'm offering(cash, minor league filler, Bryan LaHair) and get something for Theo, or you can trap him in Boston for 12 months and piss him off, assuring he's gone after 2012 for nothing". The Red Sox have no leverage to demand value.

based on this logic, no team would ever get anything of value for a player, manager or general manager who requests a trade, yet it happens all the time.

they could easily keep him around, win 100 games and the world series next year, and he decides to stay in what's kind of his home town with his wife and young family. it's not like he hasn't changed his mind before. or he still wants to leave, but there are other good organizations in the market for a GM. and what do the cubs do, have randy bush make all the decisions for the next calendar year? there is still some leverage on the red sox' side.

Players are so different an animal it's not even worth considering. Managers probably are as well, but they're the only precedent we have, and it's a precedent of one(due to Guillen/tampering stuff, he isn't really a comparison), a deal negotiated by Chuck LaMar.

If Epstein has gone far enough down the road to say "I'm leaving to go to the Cubs", not "I don't want to GM the Sox" like before, then the odds are very slim that he stays with the team. If a good season convinces him to stay on long term, why would he even think about the Cubs job? Plus, with the presidency they'd be denying him a promotion too.

The Cubs wouldn't wait on Epstein, so they'd lose out on him. But like has been mentioned, he's far from the only attractive candidate. Theo would do a great job here, but he's not so far ahead of the other candidates that they should cave and forfeit value because the Red Sox aren't able to keep him happy.

I don't think there's anybody here who actually thinks/thought that they'd give a legitimate return back

I don't think anyone so much thought they would/thinks they will as much as speculation as to why it would be a good or bad idea.

So the people in this and the previous thread were just trolling? Over the past week, people have talked about the possibility of virtually every one of our valuable assets being involved.

Looks like Boston's ownership has gone a little batty. They would seem to be hoping for a massive shake up, so Ricketts better not give them anything of value.

Or they realized they'd have to do some serious spin when they gave Theo permission last Friday, so they leaked as many damaging details as possible so as to provide cover. I'm sure the meatheads in NE are going to talk even more fervently about "clearing out the entire organization," (even those who weren't on board with the Theo move).

Given the way that ownership gets off fairly scott-free in that article (the worst accusation basically says they didn't know it was going on), it seems to me that this was an ownership-level leak.

I'm not sure what the "or" was for, but that's exactly what I was saying.

i keep thinking billy beane to boston back in 2002, and the 180 he pulled after accepting the job. cautious optimism.

or when theo left the sox and then came back like 2 days later

I think we're all just losers and have been too excited for the lack of news and had to have something to talk about

Talking about the possibility and expecting it to happen are completely different. The media doofs have mentioned pretty much every worthwhile player we have: Castro, Garza, Jackson, Cashner, Szczur, Mcnutt. People are therefore going to discuss the possibilites of it happeneing. I don't think it would happen, but wouldn't be surprised if they ask for someone like Jackson, Szczur, or McNutt. They can ask for anything they want, but that doesn't mean they'll get it.

I'm pretty sure Cashman was the highest paid GM at 2 mill per year before this. He may get a nice raise himself, but my guess is Theo will still be the highest paid. And I agree totally that his job title needs to read Savior and Messiah.

He left last time because of internal turmoil and a breakdown in negotiations for his contract, not to pursue the president/GM role at the Cubs.

looks like it's done. the best part is white sox fans have to listen to this crap on the score all week and read about it all year.

that's not the best part.
