If Theo went this far and backs out for personal reasons, he can [expletive] off. You don't go this far down the road with a job unless you know you are OK moving your family, especially when money is not an issue or consideration.

He didn't accept anything, he just interviewed and was offered a position. There is nothing wrong with not taking the position because you grew up in Boston and the Red Sox were the only team you wnted to work for and you decided that you'd rather not move your family.

People interview for positions that they don't end up accepting all the time. I actually did this just last week. No one told me to [expletive] off when I declined.

If we don't get Theo, we still have our backup plan of Paul Konerko as player/GM.

I would love to have Theo but I'm scared what the cubs will be willing to give up for him. With the comments red sox ownership made regarding Theo, I don't think we need to give up much but you never know how these things go down.

that'd be too hilarious if CARMINE was what was the holdup in negotiations concerning who (what) from the front office he can bring along

Yeah, but I'm sure there were other reasons you declined the job (boss sucked, working conditions were bad, company was not what you wanted, not enough money,etc...) not that you decided you didn't want to move even though you knew exactly where the job was to begin with.

NY Daily News sounds more final...

Theo Epstein has elected to leave his $161 million Red Sox mess behind and take on the new challenge of bringing the first world championship to Wrigley Field since 1908 as general manager of the Chicago Cubs.

The Daily News has learned from two sources that Epstein, the onetime "boy wonder" GM of the Red Sox who, in 2004, broke the "Curse of the Bambino" by bringing the Sox their first world championship since 1918 and then repeated as world champs three years later, has been engaged for two days in "serious and comprehensive" negotiations with Cubs owner Tom Ricketts.

According to one source, final contract details were in the process of being worked out Tuesday night and the only other detail, albeit an important one, was the compensation the Red Sox would receive from the Cubs.

....

Apparently, the lure of ending the Cubs' 100-plus years of futility on top of what he was able to accomplish with the Red Sox, was simply too much for Epstein to resist.

As one baseball official who knows him well said Tuesday night: "Bringing the Cubs a championship is Theo's ticket to the Hall of Fame. He knows that. That's why he couldn't pass that challenge up."

The fact that the Cubs already have a scouting director (Tim Wilken) and a farm director (Oneri Fleita) in place as holdovers from Hendry's regime was never an issue for Epstein, one source said.

"Wilken's highly respected in the industry and Fleita can always be moved to another position," said the source.

It's expected that Epstein's final deal - in which the Cubs will name him President of Baseball Operations with current team president, Crane Kenney, having his title changed to President of Business Operations - will make him among the highest paid GMs in baseball if not the highest paid.

Steve Buckley was just on Sportscenter Live. He basically reiterated what the article said. Added the thought that another holdup could be Theo negotiating for people he would take with him from Boston.

Source: Epstein would be restricted, through agreement of parties, from taking employees to CHC with him, except in cases BOS green lights.

Hopefully this will put a stop to all the Crane Kenney bitching.

A source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN's Karl Ravech that the compensation would involve prospects and/or cash, but no major league players would be part of the deal, following traditional precedent.

Kurkjian's interview makes it sound like the Cubs are many years away from even thinking about contending. Why does everything have to be so exaggerated with this team?

Yeah it's so dumb. If Pujols and Fielder both leave this divsion becomes very meh. If we add one of those guys and a pitcher we should be right there.
