New thread?

Edit:

Direct link to a Brief Transcript of the Negotiations (robble robble gimme Garza)

Direct link to Gammons dissing the Cubs farm system

Direct link to the official announcement on page 226!

Direct link to Theo's comments about being spotted at Starbucks

Two baseball sources have confirmed that Theo Epstein is on the cusp of leaving his job as general manager of the Red Sox [team stats] to accept a position with the Chicago Cubs that is believed to include powers greater than he has in Boston, with an announcement expected to be made “within the next 24 to 48 hours.”

The hangup in the negotiations has been twofold. One of them is that Red Sox ownership was still hoping to have Epstein remain with the team. The other is compensation: If Epstein is to leave Boston, said one source with knowledge of the negotiations, the Red Sox are going to want “something real.”

Whether that involves a player, money or a combination of the two remains unclear.

“But this is going to be resolved very soon,” said a second baseball source.

Well that sounds promising.

dear god please don't get my hope up and this thing falls apart.

I don't think Boston wants a pissed off GM, so I think if it truly is this far along in the process it's only a matter of time.

I have to say, this is as excited I've been about the Cubs in over a year. Please let this be true.

‎@cst_cubs: Sources: Cubs have talked to other candidates in case Theo falls thru.

It's absolutely unbelievable how secretly Ricketts & the Cubs have gone about their GM search. Pretty impressive.

why is this a new thread?

I split it into a new thread. The other thread is getting tired and too much talk about things other than Theo.

We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat.

Very exciting news. My excitment is slightly curbed by the quote about compensation being "something real." Hopefully that means a big check from Ricketts and not significant prospects or players.

I don't think anything is going to be as exciting as you drunk and naked like you were that day.

This would be way better than Hendry getting canned. That was nice, but this would be the fulfillment of the promise of that day, when names like Ned Colletti were being tossed around.

I never thought then that Epstein was a real possibility.

The day Hendry was fired, or more appropriately, his firing was announced, my opinion of Ricketts skyrocketted and any thoughts of Colletti were just nonsense tossed around by people whose livelihood depended on their contacts with that type of "baseball man".

Before that day, I wasn't entirely comfortable with where he was taking this team. But that showed everything I needed to know. The next GM is just going to be the icing.
