I need someone to make me feel better about this game. With Peppers out, I can see McNabb and company being able to do just enough to give our defense fits, including making our slow and poor-tackling defense try to slow up Harvin and AP.

Vikings run defense is still good, which means we'll probably need the screen to Forte on the outside as opposed to pounding away up the gut. Couple that with needing to rely more on the pass, the fact that Jared Allen is a monster, and that our line is a cluster F and you have potential trouble. Earl Bennett practiced fully yesterday and is questionable...we could really use him, especially considering he seems to be the go-to guy on the quick drops, which there will probably be a lot of to minimize pressure.

I'm usually an optimist around here, but not feeling it this time.

If Paea is dressing up this week, do we assume that Melton will move to the end position and Okoye takes over Melton's DT position?

That's exactly what is happening.

Peppers has been a non-factor since Week 1. He's not getting after the passer, he's not really helping on run D (teams are gashing Bears up the middle, obviously not his fault though). The Bears should be able to win this game without Peppers. I think Jared Allen is actually an easier matchup for Webb than Cliff Avril and guys like that. Allen is not a pure speed rusher. Webb hasn't been overpowered as much as he has been run by with poor technique, and that's been consistent the last 2 years. I called this an "almost sure win" a couple weeks ago, and it's clearly not at this point. But I still expect the Bears to win, though I think it may be ugly and a close game.

I can't accept losing to the Vikings at home tomorrow. They're the last place team, we are at home.

I'm expecting to win. We need to win. Peppers or no Peppers.

I don't think it's outrageous to say that the season rests on tomorrow's game. If we take care of business, we get the Bucs next week most likely without LeGarrette Blount, a bye to rest up, and then a game in Philly that now appears a lot more winnable than it once did. 5-3 and the season's back on just like that. Make it happen.

One thing I think you might be underestimating is Peppers ability to draw a constant double team and how that effects the rest of the line.

Yeah, this. I will say though that I'll feel a lot better if it's Melton filling in for Peppers instead of Nick freaking Reed. While Wootton is probable, Lovie acts like he'll be extremely limited with his hand.

Melton got some snaps on the outside last week. But, the entire line has been a huge disappointment so far this year for me. I thought the interior line was going to take away some of the double teams on Peppers or make opposing QB's pay. In other words, I bought into some of the praise, but probably more because of how well some of them played in preseason.

Agreed. Funny how lack of pressure almost always coincides with a poor defensive ranking. I think we have more talent at DT this year than last year, but end play has been pretty bad. Peppers and Idonije with only two sacks each, and the backups at that position have been non-existant. And without looking I'm pretty sure we've done nothing at DT since the Atlanta game in terms of pressure, or stopping the run for that matter.
