Probably could've put this in another thread, but I really didn't want it to get lost in the shuffle...

Tony LaRussa was asked why he put Berkman in LF and Allen Craig in RF for Game 3 on Sunday night....

“It’s my tribute to Moneyball. I’m not a big Moneyball fan. I have this little place, don’t have a big place. So what we do is we take the square footage between the right field line and center field and the square footage and from left field to center field, divide that by pi and we multiply it by bulls***, and then we pick the dugout. The field that’s closest to the dugout and that’s where Lance plays.”

That's one of the most asinine things I've ever heard anyone say. I hope even the crickets refused to chirp after that one.

I'm sure Buzz Bissinger was yukking it up at that one.

That was actually pretty funny. Multiply it by [expletive]...lol.

It is something of a sin to knock MoneyBall concepts nowadays, isn't it? I think it's gone as far as being described as an attack on intellectualism.

That's because Moneyball's only concept is "exploit inefficiencies". To knock that is to be ignorant.

Yes, but let's not pretend to not get what he's saying and that the book didn't play a part in the rise of what he's mocking.

He could easily have said, "well, he's not actually a good RF, and LF is where you play a bad defender/good bat when 1B is occupied." It's rational, but not as funny.

I have to say ... I had a really good laugh. I don't care for TLR, but that was sort of ... funny ... in a way.

Funny in a "laugh at him because he is an unfunny moron and I can't believe he actually said that" sort of way.

Why do people get so mad at this book?

because for the dinosaurs think this book kind of proves that everything they've always believed isn't really true

It was the fun debate making baseball interesting, as opposed to the other major issue (steroids) which was really pretend hurting baseball.

It was a relevant book in baseball history, they made a movie about it, the movie is really good and just came out, and he made a pretty good joke out of it. How is multiply it by bullshitnot not funny?
