Of course Cruz swings thru a hanging slider, should this Cardinal team win the WS is it, with the 1986 team, amongst the worst to win a WS?

Their '06 team was pretty bad. Can't leave the '05 White Sox out of that discussion either.

what is this lunacy, they won 99 games that year

Yeah the '05 White Sox were good that year. Granted, they got a bunch of ridiculously fluky career years out of people (I still can't believe that Neal Cotts, Dustin Hermanson and Cliff Politte combined to deliver a Bob Gibson-like season and then were all out of the majors within 18 months), but for that one year, they were good.

they combined for 3.4 WAR in 185 innings, hardly Gibson-esque

their ERAs were so great because they had some great defensive performances behind them:

Rowand +17.2

Scotty Pods +8.5 (or, +11 runs better than Carlos Lee)

Uribe +7.5

Crede +5.5

Iguchi +4.1

knowing what we know now, the sportswriters who got routinely blasted by FJM and the like for propping up these guys (the focus was always on their lackluster OPSs) it appears were actually pretty much right in the end (also re: Pods' baserunning), romantic ruminations on bunting aside

Wait wait wait...there's other ways to build a good player and then a good team? Wtf?

If memory serves, FJM really went after people who kept playing up grinderball as the reason they won, and ignoring that they hit 200 home runs.

Yeah, they said they won with small ball and without power but they had 200 HR and 4 200 IP starters with ERAs below 4.

Way to keep up your crusade against the zero people who are saying that high OPS is the only way to build a good team.

[expletive] Lance Berkman and his mullet.

[expletive] AJP too.

1-2-3 start for Jamie [expletive] Garcia.

He's been Jaime [expletive] Garcia for like 3 years now to me. Cardinals' players are completely immune to growing pains evidently.

Who would have thought that the Rangers offense would go ice cold? Oh that's right we all did. Having a good GM is nice, but it can't compare to pixie dust, ugh, and copius amounts of drinking and driving,

and all four well underperformed their FIP; point being that defense was never attributed to their success and the aforementioned players were pretty divisive figures
