After the history of Japanese pitchers transitioning to the majors and underperforming for the most part, bidding on Darvish makes me nervous. However, I think this is the best move we could make this offseason, finally placing an emphasis on starting pitching. This is a spot where I think we will see what kind of path the FO would like to take this offseason.

One thing I think would be fun to do would be to have all the owners bid amongst themselves on Darvish, and whoever wins that is the only person that submits the bid, getting around the blind bidding process and ensuring one team doesn't bid super high.

 

Of course, this might not be legal, and since the process is blind, another team could outbid the winning team since they know what the highest bid will be, but it was just a fun idea I had.

It would be stupid to post 50mil bid to talk to someone who has potential but is unproven. If we were close, then maybe but how an unknown pitcher who has never started 30 games or worked in a 5 day rotation, or thrown with a larger major league ball is going to put this team over the top is impossible. Unless he can play 1st, 3rd, left and catch...and possibly start in 2 of the 5 starters spots, it's not worth it. We would have been better throwing 80 mil at wilson. This guy maybe Cy Young but 50mil or more to simply find out what it takes to even sign him...no thanks.

Everyone is unproven. Nobody has proven what they can do in 2012 yet.

 

Darvish is in his prime years, throws a hard fastball with movement, and appears to have plus breaking stuff with good command of it. That's all I need to know.
